That's really not good of the CC company to ask for the DD early.  It's not something I've ever come across with any of my CCs (2 of which I only use when we're on holiday abroad as no charges!).  Only use one for loyalty points in the UK but no use overseas because of charges.  Hope it doesn't cause you to go overdrawn because they asked for the money early.

Sorry to hear of your aunt's passing. But what a great age to get to. My dad was 93 in August & I'm always telling him I'm planning his 100th party.

  • Thank you for telling your aunt's story. My parents met in the war also but at the USO in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They waited until after the war to marry - and he had to explain the facts of life to her as her mother wouldn't do it. I came along two years later - sooner than they expected as he was still in university at the time. Sending you hugs from America.

Thank you for your comments about Auntie, and I am glad to hear my memories evoked memories of other remarkable people from the war period. I wish we remembered more. I feel I ought to record some of the anecdotes from my parents, and grandparents, and stories about their antecedents. I might write some for my DS, should he ever take an interest in the history of our family.

Well yesterday we did finally shift all my bee sh*t up into its' own crawl space loft; in so doing, leaving the dining room devoid of boxes for the first time since October! We resisted the urge to get the next lot out of the next loft (we have 4 loft spaces), but I am planning to go through some shoes and clothes, and have a bit of a turnout and tidy today, and they would not be used, so can stay there until Sunday.

After the loft excursion, there was just time for a quick shower and then DH dropped me off at the pub for my festive lunch with some fellow female beekeepters. Most enjoyable! I got to put a sparkly top and a skirt on. I did lose the rubber heel tips of both shoes (probably because they have been in a box for about ten years) - so they have stayed out to get them re-heeled.

Mr Sl is in the process of treating our bees for Varroa - using a sublimation treatment. He has been to just one location so far; he has to reacquaint himself with the system every year - so the first one takes ages.  This means only three colonies completed, checked for bees, stores and activity and all are doing well. He has three more locations to go to. Hopefully today. He won't need the dog with him as I am here, so that makes life easier for him, especially where he can't drive up to the bees so the dog can't see him. I might have to take dog to the vets today - he is somewhat obsessed by his backside the last couple of days and maybe the glands are congested. I might need to discuss changing his diet, which is mostly dry at the moment. He is on a fibre supplement and has three bitesized shredded wheat crumbled into his meals, for a bit of non-vegetable roughage. No constipation, just obvious attention being paid.

Back to the CC, which had cleared this morning by 05.30, when I logged in. I can see the VED transaction will hit Monday, and there is not enough on its own, but my state pension is also visible for Monday, so it has all worked out without me needing to temporarily top up.

I was going to suggest the market this morning, but I have got the Sourdough starter out instead and I think I might book a bread collection for next week's market if I'm not too late, and suggest we three (me, Mr Sl and the dog) pay a festive visit next week. Not cheap, but excellent quality. I'm going to get Mr Sl to do two sourdough batches and on Sunday I will make rolls and smaller loaves for the freezer as well as the other big one.

Gosh, with nothing in the diary for today I have already begun prevaricating. Deadlines feed decisiveness here!

On the new year I really want to have a go at breadmaking, sourdough especially. I just need to understand the starter thing and how to make it. Seen a few reels but they seem to have different ideas

Sorry to hear about your aunt @Suffolk_lass.  Thanks for sharing the stories; they cast a light on such a different time.  Re CC, may I suggest a formal complaint leading to a handsome goodwill gesture?! Sounds like they might be abusing the system? Love Humdinger xx

My DH makes sourdough and he uses the Bake with Jack website for the starter.

We have quite a cold bungalow so he invested in a heating plate recently and that has made a huge difference to the starter and works much better than just leaving it on the side or window sill.
