My first PC was a works provided mono laptop powered by a 25Mhz 386 processor with 2Mb RAM and an 80Mb hard disk – cost about £4000. It ran DOS 5 and Windows 3.1.

I bought first my own desktop PC in 1996, at a cost of £1400  (including a 14” colour monitor that cost £200 alone)

It was a Tandy branded Computer, which was part of the now defunct RadioShack empire -  Powered by a 50Mhz Pentium 1 with 2Mb RAM and ran Windows 95, on a small, 200Mb hard disk.

I upgraded the Processor with a “piggy back” upgrade to 75Mhz - cost £175, RAM to 8Mb (£100) and Hard Disk to 1Gb (£200)

Encarta came with it for free on a single CD !

Compare that to my latest computer

AMD Ryzon (up to 5.2Ghz), 64Gb RAM, 1Tb SSD at a cost of £600

this is approx 200 times faster processor, 32,000 times as much RAM, 12 times as much storage all for 1/5 the cost - it puts things in to perspective

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

Looks like they lie about the cost so duty is lower but there will be fees to pay, how much depends on the price declared.

So there's VAT as well ?
Doesn't look as good as I thought
Maybe I'll look elsewhere ....but where ?
I DO like the way that they openly say "And we usually declare an item at a lower value to help lower the tax amount. "

VAT as a concept is the equivalent of a sales tax in the US.  Sales taxes are imposed only on taxable transfers of goods or services. The tax is computed as the tax rate times the taxable transaction value. Rates vary by state, and by locality within a state.

    Import tax is detailed here:

Not that it matters now because you're ordered something in the UK but...

At least the OP hasn’t ordered from the USA

Any returns could/would be problematic should there be any need to

No I didn't although it would have been a better buy - more bangs for my bucks
