I had this very same problem on Friday in our woolies- we thought we had struck it lucky as there were 5 cases for sonic/mario olympics on the shelf no out of stock signs- hooray we thought queued for almost 20 minutes to be told oops we haven't got it but you can order it! SA on the next till said "You know that cos there's a sign to say out of stock" I explained there was no sign as if there was I wouldn't have wasted 20 mins queing I also asked the people behind me who were clutching the same game if they saw a sign and they said no- The SA said "THERE IS A SIGN COS I PUT IN THERE MYSELF< MAYBE YOU SHOULD LOOK MORE CLOSELY!" well I was fit to burst then as was the people behind me but its xmas and I was trying to be jolly so I just smiled and said "happy new year to you to" and walked out. I understand that signs can be moved but why have the cases- if tesco run out of beans they son't put an empty can there they just leave a gap, perhaps woolies should just leave a blank area to save confusion.

Why dont they simply take off all cases of dvds and games that arent in stock, that way if you dont see a game/dvd thats on the shelf then you know its out of stock

From what Woolworths said in their replied to both me and emmy05 I think it's because they want you to order the goods if they don't have them in stock.

This is how I understand it, but I don't work for Woolworths or anything so I could be wrong.

They put the boxes on the shelves to make the shop look like it has all the latest stuff in stock. The boxes are empty for security reasons (ie to stop people stealing the games/cds/dvds). Once you've waited in the queue to pay they tell you it's out of stock and then they are supposed to tell you that you can order it. I think you're supposed to be grateful and place the order for the item(s) rather than leave empty handed.

I think they do this because it's cheaper and easier for them to ship stuff out of a central warehouse than it is to keep all their stores fully stocked. They introduced a catalogue so people can buy more products than they can physically fit in their stores but I think in this case they have taken it a bit too far!

haha this part just made me laugh,

if tesco run out of beans they son't put an empty can there they just leave a gap, perhaps woolies should just leave a blank area to save confusion.

but its very true, its misleading, and as for signs being out saying 'out of stock' i didnt get them telling me about that in the email from their customer services, infact they hardly know theyre out of stock of certain games til they go searching for them.
when it first started happening, i used to think oh theyre just bloody lazy, dont want to go searching through the drawers to find anything, but its becoming too consistently boring now to bother about browsing through their entertainments section anymore

I had a similar problem on Xmas Eve. I wanted to buy Simpsons DVD set -series 10 and as OH has series 1-9 in the normal dvd boxed format and not the plastic head boxes they do, then obviously I wanted the same box.

They had many of each box on display so I picked the box I wanted and went to pay. The girl got the dvd out of the drawer behind the desk and put it straight into a bag when she was beside the drawer, which with hindsight, seemed a bit odd.

Anyway, I went to wrap the presents I'd bought that day and found she'd given me the plastic head box instead. I was really annoyed as I thought she should have asked me if that was suitable instead of just giving it to me.

When I took it back after Xmas, the assistant said they had none of the normal box in stock which is why I was given the other one. Where was my choice in all this?! To top it all off, she couldn't swap it as they still had none and she wasn't happy about refunding me as the box was apparently missing some kind of plastic outer sleeve. (Which wasn't on it when I took it out of the bag.)

I'm getting really fed up with the way shops and their staff work sometimes. Some of them need to remember it's boring customers like me that help keep their store in business and their staff paid! Maybe then they would work a wee bit harder to keep good customer relations.

I see their point but it is time-wasting and unfair on customers, how about they have some cases that just say"this product is currently out of stock but is available to order" ????

  • I had this last Christmas , I posted on here about it . My daughter was in tears etc after queuing up for 15 odd mins only to be told out of stock . However when we went to Woollies on saturday all the games had out of stock signs on them , and i mean 99.9% of the Wii , DS , and PSP games were out of stock . Think they keep the cases up to lure you in and make the shop look pretty but try explaining that to a 7 yr old that is bawling her eyes out .

Come on Woolworths , get your blooming act together !

  • Went in to Woolies just before Xmas and they had a sign saying Wii in stock so I thought result!! Surprise surprise they didnt actually have any left . When I suggested that it might be a good idea to remove the sign the assistant shrugged his shoulders and said he would when he wasnt so busy (which he wasn't cos the queue was only one or two people)!! Well thankyou! As I said the queue was short but I might not be so happy if I had waited 10 mins or more. Why waste people's time like this.

    Happy New Year All
