Debranding Mobile phones?

Debranding mobile phones is something new to me.

Is it advisable/worth doing it?

If so how do we do?

  • I dont know a lot about debranding but I would say to think about the legal aspects. For example you may negating your guarantee on your phone by doing so.

the guarantee will go if you debrand the phone as you are modifying the software.

debranding does make a lot of difference if you have an orange or vodafone branded phone. i can get a few images of a voda branded SE k800i and a generic unbranded one.

i can also tell you how to debrand an SE phone

Not true, despite what retailers tell you.

By debranding your phone all you are doing is putting the original software that the manufacturer intended it to have. Your supplier would have to prove that any defect to the phone was directly or indirectly caused by the debranding process

That said, it is possible to kill phones during debranding if you are not sure what you are doing.

The guarantee for most phones is not from the airtime company... but from the manufacturers like Motorola and Sony etc..

From what I've read the software that Orange and Vodafone produce are really really bad (e.g. Nokia N95 with Orange's software is really poor, but the phone with Nokia original software is excellent!)

I'd recommend de branding if you want to get the most from your phone.

As with any firmware modification you need to understand the risks and prepare make backups and seek advice from people who have experience!

I'm a newbie for phone firmware so I cannot help you.

My phone is on Virgin...It is just the menus and other features doesnt look good and the background color is awful[bright orange] I wondered it is just the phone or something to do with network!

I really appreciate your help with debranding! [also I am waiting unlock code from Virgin...does it matter?]

    Does debranding affect unlocking anyway?

Thanks very much for your help / advice:o :o:o

debranding does not affect the network locks as the locks are stored in the gdfs which is separate to the phones software.

before you debrand it, have you tried changing the theme from the default virgin one (file manager > themes)?

legally speaking if your hard drive fails in your pc under warrenty or within 12 months of purchase have you ever heard anyone refused a repair because they upgraded the software ie from XP to Vista, if you open up the PC you MAY void warrenty ( Acer desktop self hardware upgrades are allowed ), changing software does not constitute opening the phone up

My N95 is generic - I wouldnt have it any other way if & when 3 release a upgraded firmware with " memory paging " I will gladly change to 3's product code to utilise all the services I pay for

my Acer laptop runs non Acer Generic Windows as its more stable, my i-com PC runs i-com Windows as its stable & my Acer L200 runs Acer Windows as its stable, I pay for and require stability in my products/services if Orange/Voda/others dont or WONT provide that....I will myself legally and above board by not infringing my warrenty by opening the product up

if you need to sent for repair do it directly with Nokia not your network, as Nokia are aware of the problems caused by network software - it makes Nokia products look bad

if you send to network for repair & they notice product code/software change/s they CAN refuse to repair & then BILL YOU just for looking at the phone and you get your phone back " broken " or " unrepairable " as you removed the networks software - this is then logged with Nokia database & going to Nokia at that point Nokia's hands are tied as the network has addressed your mobile as "DAMAGED ", Nokia cant do anything then as that would then be a breach of the networks agreement between them, Nokia cant !!!! off the networks or they dont sell phones, they are between a rock & a hard place but Nokia sympathise with consumers

I " bricked " my Nokia N95 updating the generic software, its fixable but if it happens after product code change the networks are bar stewards & write it off as damaged KNOWING Nokia cant ( read shouldnt ) assist you. They hope you'll pay a upgrade fee, most people buy a payg....stupidity of that is the network subsidises both ! DOH !!

Nokia ever say I voided my warrenty I will contest that to legal action - changing product code does not change the internal hardware & at no point am I opening the phone up to do anything so as far as I am aware IF you challenge Nokia they will back down - they would be stupid not to, I mean physically opening the phone would avoid the warrenty, but you never did that ;)
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)

There are very few options and are dodgy too!

If you get the right version of the software it can & will unlock the phone for all networks, I did it earlier this year with my Virgin Motorola V225.

Do I need any special cable?
