I've got a set of these and the sound seems very good to me. They are bluetooth but come with a cable if you want to use them wired

headphones (rather than earphones or earbuds) designed to be used outdoors that are weather resistant/proof will either be within budget but not exceptional quality or very expensive. As has been said oxymoron. However looking at suggestions or going to Richer sounds to try out some, you might find them acceptable.2

Currently looking at either:
- Grado SR80x
- Rode NTH-100
- Austrian Audio Hi-X15

Looks like you have been reading what hifi reviews?Certainly those phones are good and round about your budget especially after you clarify.Points to bear in mind:Consider how rugged each is. If you are gardening there will times when your lead gets caught on something and pulls them off your head. Weather ingress might not be too bad on the closed back ones but the open back Grado might be more susceptible to moisture/dirt.Cable connections need to match your audio source. Not all are TRS jack output if mobile phones.Audio quality should be good on all three ( no personal experience of any of those ).Rather than cable connected Bluetooth might be better functionally but battery life then is involved. For the closed ones expect passive noise cancelling of around 20dB. Enough to keep some extraneous noise down a bit but you might still hear being called in for a cuppa( if that applies) or a phone ringing.Non of those are ruggedised - if that is what you want - so if you were to damage them once a year your budget would be blown! Racal phones have historically been used in those circumstances but they were not the most comfortable and not good sound quality!Although I am a great fan of Røde ( I have several of their mics), for garden use I would go for some cheaper or even used phones especially if they were plain headband pro ones that tend to be designed a bit more ruggedly. Picked up some used AKG ones for a lot less and most people would be impressed with their sound. Not audiophile but still impressive. Other mainstream brands can be good too.1

After lots of reading I think I have decided that open-back headphones might be better but many of the £100 ones of these are reported as lacking in deep base, seems need to go >£250 to get open-backs with good bass.

What are you plugging them into and what is the source of the audio?1

Latest couple of possibilities:
- Philips SHP9600
- Beyerdynamic DT990
but question whether the Beyerdynamic are suitable for a portable player due to their 250ohm impedence.0
