Keep trying until you get someone who will send out the new sim as they’re supposed to. Or you could try the shop - they used to action the transfer from one sim to another via the till somehow.

You can buy one for about a £1 in many newsagents and then go to that link to swap your number and tariff onto it.
That sounds wrong, for a SIM swap the provider has to supply the new SIM.

Sounds like OP has a "legacy" tariff, much like the O2 Classic that's in the phone I'm typing this on. I don't think O2 have a pure PAYG product any more, or if they do they make it very hard to aquire.
    This isn't right for O2.

You cam just buy one and then use the swap sims link to transfer existing tariff, number etc
Fair enough, must be right if you've done it this way.
  • Here you go:

Most "traditional" PAYG options require you to top up regularly, iD Mobile ie is the best example as they require £10 every two months, well that's £60 a year and if you don't use it that often you'll ultimately end up with more credit than you know what to do with.

Unfortunately PAYG has always been the poor man's mobile option and there is no required provision to refund any credit if you up sticks to somebody else (some providers may do it but they are under no obligation to do so).  You can always donate £10 of the £11 credit you have to Children in Need or something by text, and then feel not as bad that you're only loosing £1 instead of £11 for example if you find another provider.

Here's how to move provider these days (note you don't need to talk to 02, its all automated and you can do it with a text and a form on the new provider's website) and keep your number:

Thanks for this, I was just looking at tarifs this morning but they are all selling data, whilst I am more interested in basic texting.

Hi, Do you also have an O2 PAYG SIM? Haven't you been contacted regarding a switch, too? I stopped at the newsagent this morning but nothing looked very appealing. Everyone is trying to sell data, which is the one thing I am not interested in for my old phone :(

I have an O2 Classic purchased from ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323873641211
2p a text BUT I can't vouch for their validity since I bought 3 years ago. Still, 99p incl pp for 2! Activation (if it works) will cost you a min top up.

Also you haven't mentioned how important it might be to preserve your current number.

I just found these first 5 deals (GiffGaff even uses the O2 network) - wouldn't they work the same as the PAYG product I am on now? https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cheap-mobile-finder/sim-only/

Sorry the link does not show the correct results. I put 0 minutes, 0 text messages, 0 data and found some results that do not force me to top up every month.
It seems that O2 will only stop offering me the service in April next year, so I may drag my feet a bit in the meantime...

Yes I'd like to keep the number as: 1) I remember it (!) and 2) I have quite a lot of subscriptions associated to it (and 3) I never get any annoying phone calls on it!)

I'll try to go to the shop - many thanks! I just hope they won't treat me like the lady I spoke to on the phone...
