I had disabled my normal sim because I understood that to receive a text (or call) would have cost me money which I didn't want, especially spam texts.
Which mobile provider are you with and where were you travelling?  The subject of costs to receive texts came up in another thread recently and nobody could identify a provider that charged for this....

EE sent me a text to tell me using my normal sim with them while in Canada would cost me £6.74 a day for data use.  Also that I would be charged £1.66 a minute to make or receive any calls.  And 82p to send a text and 89p to send a picture message.
So clearly no charge to receive a text then?
  • I just looked up on Giffgaff and it says to receive a text is free in Vietnam. So maybe I could have kept both the Giffgafff sim and the esim active at the same time. I was worried that my phone might not know which sim to use though and I'd end up with a big bill for data or something. But next time I will try to keep the Giffgafff sim active.

Yes but as I said I had no way of checking.  And I needed to other services which would cost a huge amount so swapping sims was the only choice really.

With ever increasing use of Two Factor Authentication, I wouldn’t want to be unable to receive texts on my usual number, and that means I would see calls. We’ve got an old phone we could put a SIM into.

I use Giffgaff, from time to time I get £5 credited and use that for the occasional thing that isn’t included.

Obviously depends on which model of phone/OS you run but certainly with iPhones its very easy to set which Sim is to be used for data etc.

Also true on Android (Pixel at any rate).  Typically you would have data on a local or eSIM, and text/calls on your "main" SIM.

Messaging apps such as WhatsApp use data not text (which some folks can find confusing).

With Vodafone here and some countries do have a cost associated with incoming texts (none that I visit).  But you can check in advance here:

From my "Calls and Charges" pdf....

If we are charged an admin fee from a foreign network operator for you to receive a text, we will pass this charge to you.
