Credit card payments getting declined and blocking the card

Hi all,

I have a credit card that I always use for spending overseas and for overseas websites, but recently payments have been getting declined and the bank is blocking my card and I have to call the fraud number to get it unblocked. This has happened 3 times on the same website and I have had to call 3 times to get it unblocked. It’s a website I use all the time so it’s not something new. Does anyone have any idea what is happening?

Thanks.

Can you say who the card issuer is, and what the web site is?  There can be many triggers for this kind of block.

One of the cards I reserve for use abroad has taken to texting me every transaction "A purchase was made on your card ending XXXX for £YY.YY at ZZZZ. Please call us if this wasn't you" which is annoying, but not in the same league as your issue.

Banks use sophisticated algorithms to detect potential fraudulent activity. If there are any unusual patterns or if the payment seems out of the ordinary for your spending habits, it might trigger a block.

Nothing new and seems to be worse on credit cards than debit cards.
Morrisons e.g. have blocked all of the following cards on previous shopping orders I did.
    Tesco, Sainsburies, Capital one, Barclays.
But since I started using lloyds debit card not a single blocked payment.

Banks do not monitor customers spending habits in this way... Or how would people get their Christmas spending through, given that is way out of peoples usual habits...
Security systems as based on known fraud patterns.

It the Halifax clarity card and the website I am using it on is a proxy shipping site, never had any trouble using it there before as I use it over 3 time a month on the site. I don’t get any notifications on my app when I use it or if it gets declined.

So the shipping address of the item doesn't match the registered credit card address?

My problem is getting sent security codes to enter or having to authorize a card payment in an app.

Even had to authorize an eBay purchase of £1.75!

The shipping address matches the name on the credit card.

Why are you using a proxy shipping site?

Let's put it another way - let me ask for more detail on your blocked transactions. I am assuming you are paying for a product and entering the delivery address of the proxy shipping site, whilst possibly also providing a billing address (of your UK address, presumably matching the address on record of the credit card).

If you didn't enter the billing address in addition to the shipping address, then there will be a mismatch if these two are compared. If you did, then there shouldn't (but there is a small chance there still might be) a mismatch.

Are you getting blocked paying for the original product, or the proxy shipping?
