    thanks, Shirley Park! :)
I do get fed up with the journey to work as it is, from here in Ringwood. Some days it can take up to an hour and a half! Nightmare! I have also seen places on Rightmove in Coxford/Lord's Hill/Aldermoor area which also look interesting. What are your thoughts on those areas?

I have some colleagues at work in Winchester who live in Southampton and who get the train in. So, that could be a possibility, too. Much quicker!
LMAO I was actually going to put that in my original post as potential other places to perhaps avoid, and looking at your situation more, definately so!

If you're happy to commute via train, St. Denys could be an option, very good rail links, but also near the M27 (although a bit naff getting onto it in rush hour, like all junctions). It's got a choice of 4 pubs in that area, all with character, not far from Portswood shopping area and not too far from the Common (and the The Cowherds pub ;) ) but also not far from Bitterne shopping precinct too that also boasts a bowling alley, Riverside park and the river..................again though if you get the wrong side of St Denys you'll smell another sewage works! (not ALL of So'ton is a sewage works!!). The properties are quite small in that area so great for a single person

LOL edit to say, sorry Shirley Park had missed your post re St Denys!!! So this is me backing you up now!!

I work in Eastleigh and would second that on the rough parts! But then I guess that can be said for any town/city, Winchester is considered an affluent area...............as long as you don't go near Stanmore by all accounts!!

Maybe..............I might be biased as I work with young people in Eastleigh and hear a lot of stories, and see a lot more police action as opposed to when I frequented Millbrook more often

Wait until a day you aren't working, beg borrow or steal (joking on steal!) a Red Book or A-Z of Southampton and have a good couple of hours driving around, making notes of places you would rather avoid.

Someone mentioned Fair Oak, which is a much nicer area than some, but of course that is reflected in the price :(

Everything is so expensive in Winchester and as a result, so is everything within commuting distance that is a nice area. Do you want a village or town type place? Would you prefer newer areas, such as a large part of Fair Oak is, or does that not matter? A busy area with many pubs / clubs/ mixes of people, or a quieter family-type areas?

Just thinking about areas that may be the kind of place that you are looking for.

  • As a local solicitor I don't want to be too opinionated on this kind of thing.

The boundaries of areas of towns tend often to be based upon subjective opinions and estate agent usage. Cities like Southampton are divided into Local Government Wards which have names and at present there are Shirley, Freemantle, Millbrook, Redbridge and Coxford wards in the areas mentioned. The boundaries of these have changed from time to time to reflect population changes and are merely an attempt to provide equal representation for local government voting purposes. These names can cause confusion because sometimes the areas covered include other areas that locals would not use that name for, e.g I suspect that most of the Redbridge Ward, except the extreme south western bit, would be referred to as Millbrook, whereas Millbrook ward is mostly Regents Park.

Thus I think the Up My Street statistics looks as if they were based upon Millbrook Ward which includes all of Regents Park and a bit of the eastern part of the Millbrook Council Estate, whereas the western 2/3rd of the Council Estate is in Redbridge Ward which is a disadvantaged area for SDLT purposes. I don't think most locals would call Regents Park Millbrook.

As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.

Okay, if I was pushed to say one absolute no-no, it would be Shirley Warren I reckon.

Have you thought about in the centre of Southampton more?

Not sure what you want and how much you are looking at either but we lived in the centre (near the avenue) and that was fine and didn't get any problems.
