  • I just asked my sister about this again in a very general kind of way and she has said that every area handles situations differently so you really should discuss it with your CPN to be raised as a point of discussion at his/her next multi disciplinary meeting to find out for definite how things operate in your area but in her experience which was in London the Psychiatrist actually dealt with it himself by writing letters to each of the relevant creditors stating that the person did not have the mental capacity at the time of signing the agreements to make them enforceable. :D

    Hi need to sort it,
I don't know why I've only just come across this thread but glad I did and I also think it's one of the best things that you could've done for yourself.
My son is bi-polar (he's 23) and only got diagnosed about 12 months ago though I believe he has had it since about the age of 13 looking back on things. After a spell in hospital he is on an even keel due to anti ds and mood stabilisers so understand where you are coming from.
Well done on what you have done so far.You are doing fantastically and this is where your thread really comes into it's own as when you feel down or that you haven't achieved anything or feel groggy you can read this and see what YOU have ACHIEVED.
Never apologise for anything you write or ramble about on here...those mutterings will help you whether anyone else understands them or not as this is your space so never apologise as we all understand.
Please do not worry about whether the creditors get back to you or not ..we will deal with them one at a time as and when..we will not let it get too much for you!!!...you have a great medical team and a lot of friends here so you are never alone.
The idea of a specialist mental health welfare officer is also good.Another thing you may not be aware of but please contact the job centre as part of building up confidence to help returning to work with a disability they can arrange a gym membership as this will build up your confidence and is known to release endorphins..it was offered to my son..so may be worth a check...
so remember you are never alone we are here for you take care

I am seeing CPN this week so will ask her, I always feel bad asking for things cos they are always so busy. Thanks for that :-)

Oh taxi I was doing well on the tears til i read this lol, this place is just fab.

I am sorry to hear about your son, its very hard looking out for someone with BP.

I know I have put my family through hell but count have given a flying fig cos I didnt know there was anything wrong, just thought I was reckless and selfish, but in real life I am not those things.
I was undiagnosed for years but like your son the signs were there but they just werent picked up on, but at least I now know what the bizarre behaviour was all about. Mood stabilisers have indeed helped, I am by no means symptom free but overall I am doing ok. There is always the fear though that the next episode will be the one that comes to stay :-(

We dont have a specialist MH welfare officer that I know of in this area, there is one attached to Social services but I am almost certain that it is just benefits she deals with.

The jobcentre have been fabulous with me, even meeting the costs of equipment for me to do my course, couldnt ask for me.

Someone suggested contacting a solicitor on the legal aid scheme to see if they can help me challenge the enforceability, what do people think about that?

I think that it might be worth contacting your local CAB office first because their advice is free and supposedly at least impartial and they will be able to point you in the right direction of how to pursue it. Is your CPN not helping you out with this?

Your CPN should know what services are available to access in your area and are most likely to be the correct people to guide you through this as it really does take a specialist to get in touch with the debt companies .....it would be worth checking the CAB to see if they have access to a specialist mental health debt advisor..they may not have one there but could refer you to said person....everything will work out in the end....worrying ..please don't worry
  • Ta, I will ask her this week, my local CAB would be a no go, but I could get to the city one
  • Check your PM's!!
Re the getting help would ask the CPM & possibly ring CCCS as they could assist the best me thinks & will prob have the expertise with most areas of debt. The appointeeship scheme with the council would also be able to help but this is what I mentioned previously...there is no harm enquiring but I would try CCCs forst myself. Just explain the circumstances & see what they say. Also have a chat with the CPN when you next see her as they must have come accross this before...hugs for you!
