If you want to add apps to your home screen, go into the bit showing all installed apps, hold one of the icons down and drag it, your home screen should appear and you then drop it where you want

If your old phone is connected to WiFi it would be perfectly normal for Google to still work on it - the days of phones not doing anything without a SIM in them are long gone. But if there was no WiFi then you would get a page cannot be displayed error as with no sim, there is no mobile data to access the internet.

Getting the apps that you like on the front phone should be a case of dragging and dropping them where you want them - and selecting add to home screen if that app is installed but only accessible when going through the phone to find it. If there are pre-installed apps that you don’t want that you can’t uninstall, click the disable option for that app (a list of installed apps is found under Settings and then Apps on my S22.)

As regards to Facebook Messenger, I can’t really help as I don’t have it. Is this an app or do you access it via browser? But if it is asking you to join then that would suggest you are not logged in, or potentially a tab suggesting things they think you might be interested in if you are. Is there an option along the bottom for contacts or friends or similar that might display the view you’re used to? If you have a load of things popping up in the browser that you don’t want, close all pages and delete the browsing history before doing anything else.

I will take a bit of time to see is what.  I had googled Messenger but it brought up different CHAT options and I don't like anything like this.  I don't know if I can get on to FB and see where my friends are etc  Thank you all for the info.  My daughter told me that the old phone will be using my Wifi .  At least I can use that until I get this lot sorted out,  Thanks again Sue

This will link you to Facebook messenger from the Google Play Store

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.orca

To find apps, I'd use Google Play which should be installed on your phone, it has a triangle shaped icon, comprising of 4 smaller triangles.

Should you want further help I remember you mentioning you might be able to get to a John Lewis store.
They have tech experts in-store who will help set up a new phone with apps/info from your old phone. They will move one or two important (to you) apps as long as you supply the relevant usernames and passwords. Cost £30 (or it was in 2022).
There might be other local computer stores who will do this cheaper but you would need to look for these.

In my situation my parents had an old Android phone and a new Iphone. The tech person could not transfer the whatsapp messages on the Android to the iphone. They said it would be different say if it was iphone to iphone and the messages were backed up. But whatsapp was installed on the iphone with all the same groups from the old phone.
If transferring from Android to Android, I don't know what is possible nor do I know if anything needs to be backed up to the Google cloud beforehand.

There is a little shop locally where the mother has got wool/craft etc  The other half of the shop the son does repair of computers etc I reckon he might be able to do it.  I have had a look and he is Tom Tech repairs . The shop is closed today but will be open on Monday.  That might be the best option.

I am wondering if I should go back and do a factory reset so that everything is gone and I could start over again ??
I value the information that I get on this forum.   I have got a laptop and the old phone is working on WiFi as there is no sim card.  I feel I am in a real muddle now.  Sue

Are you able to upload any photos of the things you’re worried about so that we’re better able to see what is going on? You could photograph the screen of the new phone with the old phone.

You mentioned your daughter - could she assist? Or any neighbours or friends nearby that are reasonably comfortable with technology? It’s not a particularly techy job so it would seem a shame to have to pay to get it done.

Nothing to lose by factory resetting the new phone and starting again.

With all due respect to those on here who are trying to help it seems to me that you'll get a better result by dealing face to face with someone who can help you with all this and can make an assessment of how best to help you and - if that's what you want - maybe pitch what they show you so that it's accessible for you; but if you just want it sorted then they can just sort it for you.

Anyway, good luck with it and I can understand it must be frustrating as even those of us who might claim to be into techy stuff can certainly get very frustrated sometimes!

Thank you all once again.  My daughter was here this evening.  She said somehow I had set up a new FB account.  She reckoned that this had happened as she got a request and her friend too.  The friend was concerned about it but Julie told her that I had a new phone.
The Apps are all there and she sorted out my actual FB account.  I just need to spend a bit of time looking at things.  I need to buy a cover and I have never has a screen protector and my daughter reckons I should buy one. I will have a look at all that once I get my brain back in some sort of order.  Thanks again to all of you.  You are so generous with your time.  Sue
