I returned the shoes to the store in the next town. They couldn't have been nicer and had leas than flattering things to say about the other store or the customer service team, speculating that I should make a complaint. Opted for a refund (as I was given a choice), as I didn't want to go through all of this again.

I know, but at least it's done now. I was apprehensive going to the other store, but the two experiences couldn't have been more different. It does make one wonder how often they get away with this.
