For those looking to buy a present for young children, we bought chickens last year for our 2, then aged 3 and 5, from Farm Africa,
http://www.farmfriends.org.uk/
because unlike most others, not only does the recipient abroad get the gift (chickens, goats etc) but the recipient in this country gets a little toy animal (a small plastic chicken in our case) and a child-friendly info pack as well - this helped make our kids feel they had something tangible and helped them to understand/remember what the gift was all about, in a way that just a certificate wouldn't have done at their age.
For what it's worth, Farm Africa/Farm Friends are doing bees (a gift of a beehive) this year so we may go for that - £15 I believe. Educational and worthwhile.0 -
Sports make the world a better place

Cedrine Sagara, 18, believes sport is a great leveller. ‘Sport ignores differences of religion, class, culture, and ethnicity.’ she says. In Burundi, a country torn apart by violent ethnic conflict, Christian Aid’s local partner organisation gives young Hutu and Tutsi people the chance to unite by playing basketball matches. Your gift could bring peace to future generations, both on the court and in the community.
Celebrity Endorsement - Lemar, Singer
'So many kids use sport and music to escape difficult situations. In some African countries, like Burundi, where there has been long-term conflict, warring factions come together to play football or basketball to ease tension. The basketball which costs eight pounds from Present Aid is definitely a gift I would send, knowing it is helping kids in a war-torn country to come together and do something positive instead of fight.'

These are all great, some lovely ideas. I have bought all my pressies but bought some stuff 'for myself'! from the original post. Hard to know who will appreciate such a gift, I know I would but not everyone would I suppose!0

I've sent it to all my friends / colleagues
I'm definately getting my dad a toilet for xmas.. or maybe a goat...
TQ
I got my mum in law a goat last year...:rotfl:
This site is a great idea and I've asked people not to get me pressies for the past 2 years but to buy from here!
Not wishing to appear ungrateful but how often do we get a pressie and thinkThis post was created in an area that may contain nuts!0 -
I think this is a great idea, but I'd rather see the money spent closer to home as one or 2 others have mentioned, than some remote african country who to be honest get hundreds of millions of our taxed money from our government every year.
What I would NEVER buy is one of those 'acre of the moon' type scams that are often touted as presents for those who have 'everything'.0 -
