I don't know if this is the same thing, but Oxfam are doing this too - my mum just bought 10 chickens for £10 for her friend's birthday. I think it is a fantastic idea, having just had my birthday yesterday and not wanting anything but people still want to buy you something it's perfect. <snip>
Hi KK - The Oxfam one is Oxfam Unwrapped at :

best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."

I have bought several people trees in the past, from the woodland trust. They get a certificate and a tree is planted in a uk wood of your choice, from the woodland trust.
http://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/
its £10 to have one tree planted.
This type of gift is a good one, people are touched in a way that you can never hope to achieve with socks or gift vouchers!Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:
I have done reading too!
To avoid all evil, to do good,
to purify the mind- that is the
teaching of the Buddhas.0 -
Thanks Martin, that's a great Site.
I normally get my dad something trivial from the kids for Xmas, a chocolate orange and a pair of novelty socks.
Well, my dad loves fishing so I just got a fishing net off the site in his name.
Put my message inside as " Dad, I know you love fishing, thought you wouldn't mind letting someone else try it xxx"
I've not spent more than I normally do and I'll prob end up buying him a choc orange anyway ;DJust run, run and keep on running!0 -
Think about the great fun your recipient can have when they are asked what they got for Christmas. The usual list includes chocolates, socks, wine, jumper. Imagine the look of suprise if you can stick a goat in the list.

or a toilet (one of the options at greatgifts.org) - should appeal to someone with a sense of humour. ;D
The Woodland Trust idea is a nice one too - or for something more exotic you could give the gift of an acre of rainforest in the Amazon Basin project in Ecuador from the World Land Trust. (£25) "Buy a gift acre and you will be paying for one Real acre in a Real place, to be purchased, protected and managed by The World Land Trust Forever.- Wildlife comes free of charge!"
http://www.worldlandtrust.org/supporting/perfectgift.htm#includes
Finally, everybody loves chocolate and the choccies from Choc Aid include a donation "to projects which help counter hunger in the developing world. You are also able to decide the exact hunger project to benefit from your money."

Perhaps Martin could mention all of these worthy causes in his newsletter a few times as we approach Xmas?"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."

Do you know if there are animal charities who has similar gifts to sent out? I would love to give animal related gifts in the same manner as the oxfam etc charities..0

This is a great site and I will definitely be doing some of my Xmas shopping on it. But dont you think that it is sad that some of the countries that live in poverty are part of our Commonwealth? We allow 100 of thousands non worthy immigrants into our Country and pay them tens of thousands a year to stay here. I know Im going off on a tangent here but how much of a difference would that make in a life to a Kenyan child.0

Liked the fishing net idea!
Also good for a wedding list; I'm getting married next year but my fiance and I don't need much in the way of domestic equipment so it would be a nice way for people to buy us really useful presents.
Here are some more, similar sites (please excuse me if any of them have already been listed):
http://www.itdg.org/?id=christmas_cards_and_gifts
http://www.landmines.org.uk/gift_voucher.asp
http://catalog.heifer.org/ (this one's US-based)
http://www.globalgiving.com/ (ditto)
I sponsor a child in Guatemala through Plan International (https://www.plan-uk.org) and their printed catalogue has similar gifts; you can dowload a copy from the website, but they don't seem to sell them online.0 -
