Funny I should have started this thread and now this comes along. No pun intended but I was just wondering out loud that perhaps the newer banks are, shall we say, not all they seem to be. I was reading other posts about Revolut earlier and a poster made a statement “it’s ok until something goes wrong.” At least with established high street banks you have the option of calling in branch if you have a problem to sort out. That is if there is a branch near you that hasn’t closed! In our town we have the luxury of all major bank branches - or did have until Barclays shut shop a few months ago.

Unfortunately, no Branch can overwrite the fraud mechanisms or the central fraud team. You might feel better after venting, in the politest way possible, in a Branch but it won't speed up the process

Yes, you’re quite correct. I was merely making a comment about every day pitfalls that can be encountered. 🫣
  • I opened a Starling account as I wanted to send money to a US friend and it was easier than using Western Union or other such company, that I'd used before. I also used Starling when visiting said friend, so just put the amount of money I need for my trips rather than use my normal account.  I now just use it monthly to pay my mobile £5.00 sim back up card, just to keep the account ticking over between trips, very nice they keep sending me little amounts of interest. I would probably, if opening an account for US trips now, open a Chase account, just because of the adverts for Chase.

Starling would be no different to any other bank as they all have to follow the same rules.
    Or maybe they don't  :-)

I've got both. I fund the Starling app is better.

They won't let me open a second account because I swapped my first one elsewhere for £200. Clearly I'm not nearly dodgy enough for their usual customer base.

I have heard people say this but I opened a new one within a year of switching out an account without any issues. Maybe hit and miss

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

More that their systems aren't built that way and they don't want to be opened then used as a dummy account for switching.

that one year ban rule used to be the case in the past, however since around beginning of the year they do not accept returning customers at all
