Funny I should have started this thread and now this comes along. No pun intended but I was just wondering out loud that perhaps the newer banks are, shall we say, not all they seem to be. I was reading other posts about Revolut earlier and a poster made a statement “it’s ok until something goes wrong.” At least with established high street banks you have the option of calling in branch if you have a problem to sort out. That is if there is a branch near you that hasn’t closed! In our town we have the luxury of all major bank branches - or did have until Barclays shut shop a few months ago.friolento said:Starling have just been fined £29m for not checking their customers enough. https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/starling-bank-fined-29-million-pounds-financial-crime-failings-2024-10-02/
Unfortunately, no Branch can overwrite the fraud mechanisms or the central fraud team. You might feel better after venting, in the politest way possible, in a Branch but it won't speed up the process

Yes, you’re quite correct. I was merely making a comment about every day pitfalls that can be encountered. 🫣friolento said:DasTechniker said:

I opened a Starling account as I wanted to send money to a US friend and it was easier than using Western Union or other such company, that I'd used before. I also used Starling when visiting said friend, so just put the amount of money I need for my trips rather than use my normal account. I now just use it monthly to pay my mobile £5.00 sim back up card, just to keep the account ticking over between trips, very nice they keep sending me little amounts of interest. I would probably, if opening an account for US trips now, open a Chase account, just because of the adverts for Chase.Paddle No 21:wave:0

Or maybe they don't :-)400ixl said:Starling would be no different to any other bank as they all have to follow the same rules.

They won't let me open a second account because I swapped my first one elsewhere for £200. Clearly I'm not nearly dodgy enough for their usual customer base.MEM62 said:

I have heard people say this but I opened a new one within a year of switching out an account without any issues. Maybe hit and missflaneurs_lobster said:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

What a coincidence....MEM62 said:

More that their systems aren't built that way and they don't want to be opened then used as a dummy account for switching.flaneurs_lobster said:
