Thanks all. We have decided not to go to Vegas until our son is 21. Guess I could always celebrate my 45th there!

Now all we have to do is find an alternative destination.

Thanks to everyone for all your help & advice over our lack of spending power! Just to fill in a few details, we are unable to get refunds on what we have already paid for which is as follows: Flights, rooms at the Excalibur - got their $61 per night deal - paid up front - no cancellations. The car was booked on Lastminute at the same time as the flight so no cancelling there either!
From your kind advice it seems we could manage to be quite thrifty when actually in Vegas although my Brother is taking some convincing. I feel from the tone of his voice that he has already made up his mind not to go.
Like the idea of two meals per day and doing some sunbathing - can you take your own drinks to the pool?
    Thanks again

    PS. Whereabouts is Ellis Island?

If you've paid upfront for everything then it would be a massive waste not to go. Ellis Island is on Kovan Lane not to sure how long it will take to walk there. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Theres a site called cheapo vegas which has comparison chart for restaturants and lists of free stuff to do- im sure you will be able to fill your time and if your stuck at home your going to kick yourself for not attempting to go

  • During our stay next year we're looking at the luxor for the first few nights (mainly because family and friends will be there)

Do those who have experienced the luxor and vegas consider $948 (inc tax) for a 5 night stay (Sun-Fri) in a pyramid spa suite a decent price? Consider that there is a 25,000 attendee conferenace on at mandalay bay during our time there too so maybe that would push up the price a bit.

I agree with the others - while I can understand hesitation on going due to current financial constraints, what you'll effectively be throwing away but not going isn't cheap...I think that if you look around you will be able to find plenty of good deals. We generally only do 2 meals a day in Vegas as was suggested and you can find some discounts out there as well. Also, check your PMs.

The only reason that I would suggest reconsidering the trip is if you're gamblers...this is why I'm not sure if we would go in your situation - I think we would, but we would find it really hard I think to be in Vegas and sticking to a tight budget on the gambling side. I'm sure we wouldn't book a trip if that were the case, but not sure how we would handle a trip that was already booked and paid for. I think we would go, but we would have to make sure to plan plenty to distract us from the slots!

We pretty much only play penny slots...if money were really tight we could still do it but would have to drop our normal bet quite a lot which might be a bit painful for us...but I'm sure we'd come up with something in order to make the trip. :)

    PS. Whereabouts is Ellis Island?

We once did a whole trip and tried to see how little we could spend, it was real fun doing that. Bought an American Casino Guide and away we went. food bill for 7 days was $70 for the 2 of us. Ellis Island is the place to go. It's a local casino but fun all the same. They look a bit rough and ready in there, but it's mainly construction workers going for a beer after work, and they love talking to you if you have a Brit accent. $1 for pint, they have there own brewery, try the Amber beer, like a smooth bitter. $1 for a pint of coke, Steak dinner for $6.99 BBQ for $7.99 with players card, and 241 with an ACG guide. You will never get a bigger meal for the price. We always end up taking some home in a doggy bag and eating it cold after a long night out, sounds gross, but hey, we like it. And finally, AFAIK they are the last Bastian of actually having slot machines that give out real coins, ah, the sound of all those quarters hitting the tin, I DO miss the old Vegas!!
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Operated the Vegas and got back just a few days ago. IFE was no issue. However, yes I know how unpredictable it is.
Upgrade to Premium on a Vegas ( or any other flight ) really not going to happen - trust me.

If an individual IFE screen is not working, we will always attempt to reset it. Its like a computer, so we "reboot" it.
Failing that, there are loads of other things we can do.
worst case, we can give you an adapter to watch the same movie as the person next to you, or SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY ( sorry, do not want to be shouted at if there is none left) we have portable DVD players.

I have said it many many times, the gatwick 747's are really not that bad. I work on them and passengered on them many times and although it does not have the movie on demand like LHR (V:Port for frequent fliers) its OK.

Im going to Vegas on a long weekend in 2 weeks and not flying direct and dreading it, I would much prefer to bear the 747 than go via LA.
but hey thats just my own oppinion!

    A

    Thanks, really appreciate that!

Im hoping my IFE works then, but at least I know I have a couple of backups just in case!
