What plants for a gothic garden
Hi,
I'm planning on making a gothic garden so looking for recommendation of plants (preferably perennials). I want something that's either got dark leaves or black, very dark purple/blue/red flowers. The garden gets sun from midday to about 5pm at this time of the year.
At the moment my ideas are:
hollyhock jet black
helleborus black
dahlia (not sure which one yet, there are a few options)
deadly nightshade
black Persian lily
tulip
rose (black Baccara)
Thanks!

Splendid idea! What about Actaea, one of the Darker Cotinus, and Sambucus 'Eva' or 'Black Lace' ?Physocarpus 'Diabolo' is really reddish, but might squeeze in, as might some Cannas if you don't mind semi-tender.Not sure about Lysimachia 'Firecracker'' for the same reason, and it does 'get about' a bit.I recommend some sounds from Japanese band Ningen Isu playing in the background. The Cure or Souxie are far too obvious, and the lyrics won't upset many! Not buying into it.2

Black elder. Black Lace or similar. Lovely shrub, tough as anything
We have a black hydrangea, which atm is not thriving but should be. Maybe worth exploring
The classic dark leaved shrub is Acer Palmatum Dissectum Atropurpurea. Very slow growing. We have had one in a tub for maybe 20 years. It's still only 3-4 ft1 -
How about Rosa rubrifolia (glauca). My mum had one, lovely dark red/greyish foliage and fabulous hips in the autumn

Tacca Chantrieri - Would need to be container grown and overwintered in a greenhouse.
Her courage will change the world.

Lovely ideaI had a 1920's house and made a 1920's garden. Lots of fun to research and do. No one noticed but I did.The black elder and grass have been mentioned. I have Prunus Nigra, a small version and comes as a tree or a bush. The leaves and stems are dark blackish purple. It flowers in Feb with deep pink flowers.Huchera I've got in dark colours but they go really dark. Type 'black Heuchra' into a search. So many and they stay in leaf all year. Usually dark pink flowers on black stems.Popular recently among the young was a cactus like succulent. Again, type Black succulent into a search and choose. They look especially good in tall pots.I hope you are going to build a crumbling wall or two in the gardenAt least you don't have to worry about the appearance of that.

That black aeonium is very handsome but I can't keep the green one- clearly I don't have the right conditions! so I suspect it it is very picky about suitable growing conditions.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
