Unusual credit card transactions

Yesterday I placed an online grocery shop order at a well known supermarket, I used my credit card to pay and as usual I had to approve the transaction through my card provider, several hours later I received confirmation from my card provider that the supermarket had now took the funds for my order, nothing unusual in that, however about an hour later I got another notification for another payment that had been taken but a totally different amount to my order then after that every couple of minutes another notification for different amounts, it stopped after four notifications so I now had 5 payments in total on my card account, I received my shopping no problem but when I contacted the supermarket they say they only have my original payment on the system and can't say what the other unusual transactions are for and said they will get their payments department to look into, does this look like a mistake on their system or possibly some sort of fraud, I'm quite concerned about this, Update: so it seems the payments to the supermarket can't be traced so they don't know where they went so said to contact my credit card company to report as fraud, unfortunately after 24 hours of contacting my card company ive received no response from them and it seems the only way of contact is via their app, after doing some digging it appears there seems to be a lot of people reporting fraud from this card company and dont seem to be having much luck in getting things sorted

I would play safe, don't assume, contact your CC company
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Yes that's my next step, just waiting to hear back from the supermarkets payments department in case it's a glitch on their system or anything before I contact them, I've already frozen my card just to be on the safe side

I've seen Asda approve (not take) various amounts during the order process, especially where I have modified the order.  The final amount taken always conforms with the amount on the final confirmation mail (allowing for veg to be weighed, cheaper substitutions, etc).

These payments have already left pending and have now been charged and I didn't edit the order or anything, the extra payments are quite large and in total almost come to as much as my whole order did, I've even spoke to a lady who said these payments are not related to my order so they are currently investigating, I just hope it's just some sort of system glitch on there end

That sounds awful customer service from the credit card company.  Do you feel you can name them?

Update: so it seems the supermarket have now discovered that the extra transactions made on my card were to purchase gift cards, this is clearly fraud as I did not purchase these but it's funny how they know my details were used to purchase gift cards but they can't find any other information such as where the purchased gift cards were apparently sent, Hmm 🤔 surely if something was purchased that I did not receive or authorise they should be giving me a refund

It's quite possible the merchant product code identifies them as gift cards

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Yes, but if the gift cards were purchased online there would have to be an address present or an email address to where they were being sent to which would not match my address as I did not purchase them

....But you could be sending them to somebody's address as a gift.
