I've 3 OVP sim so that is an excellent ideas. Never asked for an unlock before do I just call up and say

Seth: "unlock me please this is my handset IMEI, make and model"
Orange Rep: "yes sir this will be done automatically just make sure your phone is on"

If there is a script for the uninitiated I'd appreciate that!

Thanks for these top tips you've saved me lots!
you get the code sent to you via the post, and to enter it you type <**< (where < is left on the joystick).

if network is locked (ie. closed padlock), enter the code next to network on the sheet orange sent you

if ESL is locked (ie. closed padlock), enter the code next to ESL on the sheet orange sent you etc

however, the p990i uses a jog dial so its either up or down instead of left

seth you have 3 OVP - lucky sod I'd kill for just one of them !, even with 3 Orange contracts I have begged Orange for a sim on that plan to no avail as it discontinued, I have to pay talkmobile £6 a month for sim only as im in & out the UK & need the stability of contract with minimal cost, I spend enough on contracts as it is between 3 for data, Orange and a old T-mobile account nearing its end

T- mob offered me flext 35 for £20 a month ie £10 extra off current £5 off deals online with no handset but I dont need another ongoing contract as my credit file shows contracts with all of the big except o2 and thats not good for your file, also offered flext £25 with N95 free at £20 per month when I refused first offer, requested PAC told if I changed my mind to call back for offers above brefore PAC expires, I just want out to cut my costs although its superb offers, dont even want the number but easier to PAC out than get 30 days notice in writing LOL god I can find the lazy way I will :P
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)

Really - what objections are there to having lots of mobile contracts on your file? How about terminated contracts?

I ask as I have 3 or 4 live and loads of terminated as I tend to switch each year to do cashback.
    I think....

most automated credit searches see you as a risk, mobiles & credit cards are the worst mulitple things to have as they are not fixed as say loan payments

Wow this is a gold mine of information on phones! I'm glad I order the SE P990i haven't' got it yet but learnt a lot! Thanks so much.

When I call Orange do I need to ask them I've got a P990i this is my number (OVP) can you send me an unlock code?

Is there a limit on the number of unlock codes? One per SIM per year? and will the customer service people know what a code is ? Will they ask me why I want to unlock it?

In the past I've unlocked basic Noika using the codes on the MSe forum, SE phones using a market stall, and but I've never asked a network provider.

SO any tips on how to bring up the subject would be helpful. E.g. when asking for a PAC code I find mensioning I'm emigrating and work will provide a phone ;)

yeah just call them as you said, virgin allow 3 unlock codes per year and thats after you spend £30 on EVEN a payg account per year

Orange I dont know, but I have unlocked 2 T-mobiles a few months apart in 2007 in the 18 month contract period, 3 allowed me 2 unlocks on my dads account on same day last week though it did take alot of persuading ( think its against 3 policy ) and that 3 account was closed after 2 months of mix n match after 3 changed thier charging structure for the first minute of each call, so 2 subsidised handsets from different accounts done on 1 a/c - 1 two months old and the other 4 months old UNLOCKED :D

think it was because I am a contract customer with them, rather than lose me like dad they flexed the rules & unlocked my handset too, both for £15 - two for price of 1 ;)

Seth you dont have to ask for a PAC to get a unlock code matey, thats for moving network they be happier you just want unlock rather than both - just ask for handset unlock code outright for your " old handet " ;) cos " the wife bought you one with a better battery life for xmas & your son on o2 wants the " old " phone :D, pay the fee then bobs your uncle O will post you code and instructions :)

Tip for unlocking: if you have an Orange contract that's not within its minimum term (such as an old OVP Virgin SIM lying at the bottom of a drawer), use that to get the handset unlocked and avoid the 3-month wait.

Note that forcing people to wait 3 months is against Ofcom's rules, so you could probably get it unlocked if you can get through.

    Also, don't waste your 25p on calling 450 - go through 0800801010 option 1 then 4.

Will Orange still charge me for the unlock, even though I've phones on contract with them, will they just add a £15 charge to my contract account?

Thanks for the examples and clarification, I needed an example like the one you have provided: Excellent :)

no prob, unfortunatly the networks even when you have fufilled your contract are allowed via OFCOM regulation to charge a unlock fee, bloody Ofcom, I think if I fulfill my contract minimum term it should be free...but alas im not the head of Ofcom or you would be getting it free

Orange may ask you for NEW handsets IMEI number ( *#06# and send/call button ) as they " PAIR " them up for security, just give anyones IMEI that is not on Orange ;) & they may see you rarely used the SE on your a/c ( if at all ! LOL ) as it all auto logs to network if the idiot, oooopppps sorry Customer Service Agent knows where to find such info - if they ask how long you had SE as it not registered to your account just say 4/5 months, wife bought it bla bla bla but battery terrible so never used it stuck to older handset & got this new one for xmas ;)

thats you sorted to BLAG any eventuality of any question they will ask for when requesting unlock code, welcome to the mobile club ( your never too old till your gone ! ) - its like a computer geek club without the geeks ;)

EDIT : you have to pay upfront for unlock - they wont apply it to the a/c - no network will

More great info! Thanks again I'll printout your "script" and and keep it with me when I call them! The charge I assume I "just" give my credit card detail to the call centre (!?!)

Hope you do get to be head of Ofcom :)
