you shoudl eb aware the orange unlocking procedure (via code) is not as listed above.
there are a few requirements.
1) £20 fee. not £15.
2) the handset has to have been used on the orange network with the supplied sim for a minimum of 3months before an unocking code will be offered.

strange ? unlocked my old Orange contract mobile via a sim registered 7/8 days before unlock request for £15, India even transferred my excess 4 pound odds to my other payg a/c when I requested payg closure at same time, had 4 pounds odd left as had to top up again as calling 450 and transfering to a human cost me I think 20p and they would not refund me cost of call to 450 to request unlock code so I could get the unlock @ £15.00 - topped up another £5 with swipe card called 450 and all done & dusted, India hopeless as usual - at least in our favour this time !SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... Thanks looks like the £20 spend and 3 month wait is my only option! Just as well my next contract will be with Orange start in the next few days.
I might try the patch unlock if this is added for the 990i not support yet!:

This will work until the firmware is flashed again, given the age of the model I do not see new firmware being and issue and SE have official ceased new firmware releases from what I've read.
From what I've read here http://www.kulankendi.com/index2.php
I think I can buy one credit and use on the same phone for 3 things in 24 hours
1) change code to get generic firmware / debrand using SEUS
2) patch code to get unlock (will not survive reflash)
3) Anything else?
This is the text from the site that made me think the 3 mods in 24 might be possible with a single credit: http://www.kulankendi.com/index2.php
NOW WE START UNLOCKING
SE DB2020 CID 49 / CID 51 / CID 52
VIA USB CABLE DCU-60
FOR UNLOCKING YOU NEED USE 1 CREDIT ONLY
NEW CREDIT COUNTING RULES!
From now 3 operations per phone are allowed for 1 credit in 24h!!!.

somehow i dont think you will be able to patch unlock it as it uses the symbian OS unlike normal SE phones which use a java os (i think) and can be patched0

OK so the only option is £20 PAYG Credit, wait 3 months and ask for Orange to unlock.
To unbrand I need to pay for the code change using the client you were kind enough to provide then SEUS it to generic. Presumably I can unbrand and reflash while the unit is locked, and then later (+3 months) I can get Orannge to unlock the phone.
I'm about to start a 12 month orange contract so there is no rush for the unlock I'm happy to wait 3 months.
Thanks for all the advice and help.Seth.0 -

you can muck about with the firmware as much as you want, but it will not affect the locks.
you dont have to pay to debrand it, just use the links that i provided in the other thread about the p990i to do it for free (the links are now fully working)0 -

Thanks for pointing this out. My mistake.
I've
1) ordered the phone from orange
2) downloaded XSS+ from your links
3) Read the info in your link http://forums.se-nse.net/index.php?showtopic=16568 and made a printout to follow and I'll back of the GDFS as you recommendfirst!
So I should be able to do a full debrand and flash with latest SE firmware when the phone arrives! Thanks again.Seth.0 -
Tip for unlocking: if you have an Orange contract that's not within its minimum term (such as an old OVP Virgin SIM lying at the bottom of a drawer), use that to get the handset unlocked and avoid the 3-month wait.
Note that forcing people to wait 3 months is against Ofcom's rules, so you could probably get it unlocked if you can get through.
Also, don't waste your 25p on calling 450 - go through 0800801010 option 1 then 4.0 -

I've 3 OVP sim so that is an excellent ideas. Never asked for an unlock before do I just call up and say
Seth: "unlock me please this is my handset IMEI, make and model"
Orange Rep: "yes sir this will be done automatically just make sure your phone is on"
If there is a script for the uninitiated I'd appreciate that!
Thanks for these top tips you've saved me lots!Seth.0
