What was your best and worse career move?

  • Joining the Police and for the last 30 years having the ability to bring misery into people's lives ; ) not everone's, just the special ones.

The worst part is having to bring misery into peoples lives, normally next of kin, who really do not deserve it, and trying to help them get through the first few hours : (

My best move as of now was getting the job I have now as it gives me a solid block of experience. I try to have a go at everything and anything going to learn more and to have more experience.

  • Best move was deciding to go part time and study full time when I was 22. Having been in marketing at that time (and still am) I loved my job but quickly spotted that a degree was just one of those things you needed even though it doesn't guarantee you anything I know. About to graduate in months (AAAAH!) and have truly loved my time at uni, I have stayed with the same manager I had when I started my degree but we both moved organisations and to be honest I keep being told that my experience will help me out for moving up and I have seen that my degree, if nothing else, demonstrates my work ethic. So overall quite chuffed with that.

Worst move.... em, the obvious ones: letting myself become over-worked, over-stressed, never negotiating wages etc

I got food in my belly and a license for my telly
And nothing's going to bring me down

Marketing is a lot cleaner though.

My best move was to leave a job where a horrible jealous cow joined the organisation and turned it from a great team to a totally shoddy and depressing one - three of us left within 2 months and after a lovely and relaxing 6 months off, i'm starting a great new job next week.

Even better, is that I still speak to people who work at the old place and everyone still hates her guts.....gotta believe in karma- she'll get hers one day!
Some people create their own storms....then get upset when it rains!

Best career move...getting into the music industry, I loved it
Worst....getting into the music industry and really seeing what happened behind the scenes.

Worst move was leaving a cushy but unchallenging job because I fancied being a management consultant. Found out that they sat around all day talking mince and really took money immorally for not very much at all. (I'm not saying that's true of all consultants - I've used some fab ones. This shower were a joke, but guaranteed work through the public sector)

Best move was walking out of above in less than two months with nothing else to go to (single parent, two kids, no savings  ). Within a few days was offered a short term contract which 2 years later led to a board position. Btw, the contract position paid half my previous salary, had no other perks like company car but I just thought the people were the kind I'd want to work with.

I always advise people not to leave a job until there is somewhere else to go but it worked for me. I'd also say - feeling rather reflective and philosophical this morning! - that chasing the dollar doesn't often work. Follow your heart if you want real fulfillment.
