I thought we were crying out for scientists. Maybe not a career but the small progressions in life to promotions.

  • For some unknown reason, highly qualified and extremely motivated people seem to accept getting paid substandard wages because they work in science. I guess my old salary was probably similar to a civil service job.. but I wouldn't work for them either now

clearly success favours those who will take a risk.

Have made some bloopers in my life, but one of the worst moves was mving to a company with a drinking culture. The best move I have made in years was joining the company I am at now. I am treated well, and I have a brand new Volvo estate car being built to my spec as I write this, the company are doing their best to get it for me for my birthday on jan 22nd. I have had better paid jobs, but believe me I have worked for some awful people. The best feeling I ever had leaving a company was on resigning from a company in Cradely Heath that made cheap upholstery, my resignation letter was one line long.

Care to say who this employment is with? Sounds great!

I love being a civil servant! ok the wages are awful, but I get so much job satisfaction.

As a scientist employed by the government I find the salary ok but the restrictions intolerable. I understand end-user requirements but hate having to follow a set programme when results reveal a more interesting seam of possibilities

I thought civil servants were well paid generally.

Phil, you obviously read the Mail who hate us. You only hear about the really senior civil servants, who are on really good money, not the majority who are pretty lowly paid compared to private industry. The pension will hopefully make up for it.

I never look at the mail. Whats an example of how poorly paid you are?

you want me to tell you my wages, you can poke it popeye, even my mum doesn't know that.

Have a look on the civil service websites, all government agencies differ, somebody in the home office is paid differently from somebody in the job centre and they differ from somebody working for the mod. All information available online...now if I could just find it.........
