I was refunded by Royal Bank for 9.95 US Dollars, the larger 2 were declined I think.  Only 3 businesses had my card number - Lyca, New Day cards for my Debenhams and John Lewis cards and Complete Savings, a monthly subscription to a cashback scheme.  I highly suspect Lyca Mobile.  Truspilot and HUKD and several other sites are full of members complaining about card fraud and specifically Lyca being the suspect.
  • Having just looked on T/pilot, is it me or do those 5 star reviews look a bit dodgy? They all seem to follow a similar pattern.
I was very briefly, 1 day, with Lyca and hopefully any card details I gave have not been compromised.

    More trouble at Lyca

  • In the interests of fairness I have had another update from my bank. I had frozen my credit card since the incidents where both my old and brand new (hours old) credit cards were used fraudulently (Meta/Facebook transactions). The bank then issued credit card number 3. I did not use that card at all - I wanted to take it on holiday to authorise a hire car, I did not input card 3 to the Lyca account.... However it has still been used for another Facebook transaction! This was automatically declined by the bank. It's pretty horrible to be honest - feel like I'm being spied on as I don't know how the card information is getting out there. The bank said that it might be that Facebook had a subscription using my old card that automatically transferred to my two new cards. On that basis it MIGHT be that only one set of card details were leaked - this means that I am now less certain as to the source of the leak. The bank's fraud team could not "see" a subscription with Facebook currently (but that might've been deleted now anyway). Hope that helps all.

I deleted a card from my daughter's Lyca Mobile account last night and sure enough, overnight an attempt has been made by SPECIALIST PONTOONS. Google has brought me here, clearly today I'll be requesting new debit cards and moving away from Lyca.

EDIT for the record it's - PONTOON SPECIALISTS

I am surprised that Lyca haven't owned up to this data breach yet. And the intrusion into their systems (or that of their payment processor) appears to still be ongoing.

I originally experienced attempted card verification checks on the 12th and 14th May on a virtual Revolut card that was only ever used with Lyca. This card was frozen and terminated shortly thereafter. I created a new virtual card and took out a new promotional offer with Lyca on 20th May (with fictitious personal details). And on this new virtual card (again, only ever used with Lyca), I have just had a card verification check from "Rakuten Kobo", followed one minute later by a failed transation for £14.42 ($17.99) to Rakuten Kobo (failed due to exceeding the spending limit I set on the virtual card).

I had a similar experience i has a couple of charges to my Chase card last Sunday from Amazon,
I immediately called amazon but they were less than helpful, there were no transaction on my account and they said they  couldn't trace anything or give me any details.
Calling Chase they say someone registered my card details that day and tried to make two transactions, the first one was pending (?) and paid the following day, but, fortunately i got an alert for and declined the second one as it happened.
Chase were great took all the information and i got a refund on the pending transaction the within a couple of days.
My card numbers been changed immediately (you can do it in the Chase app) to prevent more transactions.

But now I'm getting spam/phishing phone calls saying my card been charged blah blah press 1 to talk to our security expert from faked caller id number (doesnt exist, and your bank/card co would never call like that with an automated message)

As far as i can work out all this traces back to me registering with Lyca mobile last year which i only used for a couple of weeks before giving up on them.

Lyca were hacked last September their UK customer details (inc bank/card numbers) were stolen yet it seems Lyca are now (unbelievably) pretending it didn't happen , but it is well documented elsewhere just google it.
  • I just wanted to chime in with another anecdotal report.

I had two episodes of attempted fraud (card verification checks) on my debit card across summer. However, I use this debit card for a whole variety of things so there's no guarantee but - if it was LycaMobile... I've only been with them since June 2024. I don't have any other likely suspects for a breach of two consecutive debit cards (first card was cancelled by me after noticing the check, second card was automatically cancelled by the bank on the fraud attempt).

More-fool-me, I guess I'll look in to virtual cards.

Yes, the fraud I experienced was within 3 months of joining them. I have a working theory (but no evidence) that was because 3 months was the time limit for their introductory discount deal before the charges increased. I wonder if they expect users to leave at that point?

So you think that Lyca themselves have decided that their new customers might be offski so they try to pump some dodgy extras through their card accounts?
