Is this your router? If so it will support a 54Mbps wireless g connection.

    Yes that is the one.

There are obviously other problems with your connection which we are trying to establish. However, if the router only uses the 11b protocol, which has a maximum speed of 11Mb/s then you must use this to connect to it, as other protocols are later and are not compatible. Your laptop will be able to connect to both 11b and 11g protocols as it is newer, but the router can only output data to any computer connected to it via wireless at a maximum speed of 11/Mb/s. As this is more than 10 times faster than the speed that data is coming in to it from the web, 11Mb/s will be fast enough for web access.
When the connection speed of your network adaptor is displayed by hovering your mouse over the wireless icon, it will just show the maximum speed for that protocol, i.e 54 for 11g and 11 for 11b.
When the other problems with your connection are sorted, it will be perfectly adequate for web use.

Thanks for explaining that, much appreciated.
I changed back to b only and while it connected instantly the internet is extremely slow, it is like being on dial up it is that slow, in fact it is worse than dial up. Loads of pages won't come up and I can't download my e-mails it is so bad.

What I don't get is why for two years have it work on b and g with a great speed and now it appears to need b only but is now crawling.

I know you have checked the laptop with another network, but i would be tempted to try a usb adapter in the laptop and turn the internalwireless off, or if you are using one already then try another. that will also check the router from a diferent wifi system.
radio systems do start to 'fade' before they fail.

It seems that the latest firmware release for your router 1.00B02T02.UK.20050815 does support 54Mbs even though the latest manual does not mention this, however 11Mbs should work fine for broadband use.
What channels are in use locally that you can see apart from your own router and what channel are you using?
What wireless equipment is in use on the laptop?
What speed test results do you get when connected using an Ethernet cable?
What are your preamble settings? see here
Do you have any other devices that may be causing interference?
When you connected to another network, presumably that was not encrypted?
    Are you using encryption?
    If so what type?

I use WEP, I don't know what channel all the others are using, don't know how to tell. Think I am currently on 4.

I have the most up to date firmware for the router and up to date driver for laptop wireless device.

I couldn't find the Preamble bit when I logged into the router, went to bit D Link said but wasn't there.
