Wireless Network Help

We have a router attached to the PC and my laptop connects to the internet using wireless connection.

For the last week or so my laptop is taking ages to show the router in the "available network" section. It used to connect automatically without any problems, it sometimes still does connect automatically but takes ages to do so.

Router is working fine with the PC and once laptop is connected it is fine.

It makes no difference how far away the laptop is from the router, it can be in same room and it still takes an age to find it.

Any ideas as to what might be causing it?

Thanks in advance!!!

Did you change the SSID to something different from the default? e.g. a unique name. There may be other new wireless networks in your locality now, can you see any others and what wireless channel are they using. You may need to find a clear channel for yours, as most users tend to leave them on the default channel - usually 1, 6 or 11.

make sure the req network is the default network and delete any others.

make sure WZC is running ok.
control panel, admin tools, services, double click on wireless zero configuration. under recovery, there is an option to change first time failure to, restart the service. change all 3. and apply.
    sometimes works.
    Get some gorm.

SSID is the same, no change.

I am working my way through the different channels to see which works best. Changed it y/day to one and it worked fine but switched on today and it wouldn't connect so have changed it to another. There are a number of new networks in the area so pretty sure that is what has caused the problem.

    Thanks for you help.

I can't seem to find WZC in control panel, doesn't seem to be an admin tools section.

It would be best to change the SSID to a unique name of your own choice, then you know that you are only trying to connect to your own router.

So what channel are these other new networks on? You need to choose a channel as far away as possible from these other networks, not simply try different channels, as they actually overlap.

    Thanks for you help.

The SSID is recognisable to me, no-one elses is anything like mine.

I am on Channel 10 at the moment.

I don't know which channel the other networks are on as they seem to be showing on my list no matter what channel I change to.

If yours is still set to the default setting SSID, what if someone else has theirs set to hide SSID broadcast? You would not see another network with the same name.

Any network should show up in your list regardless of what channel they are using. More information about other networks including their channel number can be found by using Netstumbler available here.
