they have now sent me an email saying they will re instate the pension but it looks like the offer of a lump sum was a one time only offer back in 2016  which i have now missed out on ! the sum was paid to another person with same name and date of birth as me they confirmed back then they did not check NI numbers.  I feel this is unfair and need to find out what i can do as I should still be entitled to be givn the option for the lump sum surely

Have you asked them why a lump sum isn't an option?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Why didn't the person who received it query it? I would if something like the lump sum due on my pension wrongly arrived in my account.

Pretty obvious really - either they didn't think anything was wrong (either because pensions is such a dark art they genuinely didn't have a clue, and/or they did query it and were assured all was well), or they saw no reason to say anything if there was a chance they could hang on to the unexpected windfall.

Did you keep the pension fund administrators informed of your up to date address?
    I think....

They said the lump sum was a one off offer only at that time and to be honest I wasnt aware if i had a pension with them i was just investigating lost pensions and found this out it was around 41 years ago when i worked there

What are they offering you - a monthly income? At least that will be a useful bonus in retirement. Must have some tax free cash available though.

When they say they are re-instating the pension, does that include the lost investments since it was incorrectly paid out?
