Travel insurance - awaiting hosp referral

Hi all
I am due to travel to Usa soon and looking to get travel insurance. I have visited my gp in Dec 2023 for a medical issue which I am currently facing. It’s extremely subtle and doesn’t impact me day to day. My gp didn’t think the issue was anything major but has made a referral at my request to my local hospital for further investigation. The appt at the hospital isn’t for another 8 months until 2024 end. When trying go get travel insurance quotes, it asks if I’ve got any pending/awaiting investigations which I am putting “yes” to as I’m currently awaiting review for my referral. It immediately means I cannot get travel insurance for my upcoming travel to Usa.

Is there any well known providers for travel insurance who provide cover even with people on wait lists?
I would appreciate any input or suggestions as it currently stands I won’t be able to get insurance at any mainstream provider due to the long wait lists at the nhs. What do people usually do in these instances - travel without insurance and hope for the best? Thanks

You could look at excluding whatever it is and any condition that may be related to it.if you do get ill while you’re away, The insurer will look at anything that could possibly be directly or indirectly related and decline cover.
So that would be a judgement call depending on what your medical problem is and what it could develop into.
For example I was having tests for knee pain. If I’d fallen and broken my leg in a bad way with a hospital stay the insurer may well have said that could be indirectly related to the knee pain and refused to pay.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.1 -
I've had experience of this and as long as you've got a definite diagnosis for the condition you've been referred to you should be able to get cover for that condition whilst you are on a waiting list. Try Avanti, Staysure and All Clear. You will need to phone them to get your quote.0

Can you use a private hospital? You would probably be seen much sooner.0

Recently had the same issue finding an insurer.
Have lived with a condition for over a year and, despite multiple investigations, am no nearer a diagnosis. Am awaiting 1 more test on the NHS but could be waiting another 2 years for this.
Many insurers wont quote, some will but want to exclude all other pre-existing conditions (that have a diagnosis and are clearly unrelated to current symtpoms).
The only insurer willing to cover me was AllClear.
They have excluded undiagnosed issue but covered all other diagnosed conditions I have. Oddly, the Annual Trip cover was cheaper than the Single Trip policy.
Give them a call an see if they can help - not worth contemplating heading to the States without insurance1 -
Hi, we had trouble getting cover for my husband before a diagnosis, we have a condition diagnosed now, and this year we have used instancewith.com - we ended up buying an annual worldwide policy for only £300 for the both of us. We'd had quotes of £2500 from other companies just a single trip to USA before that!
Might be worth a try, they are a medical insurance specialist.0 -
I have the same for my daughter who is waiting to see a paediatric Gastroenterologist, gynaecologist and endocrinologist
All appointments are over 1 year away0 -
Unfortunately they cant cover for ongoing issues that haven't got a diagnosis as yet such as this.
The reason is because you maybe more likely to get ill and need medical attention while on holiday.
You must declare you are undergoing investigations, like you have done, because if you didn't declare and you needed to claim, they would investigate your health and find out you didn't declare this health issue and void your claim. Even if the claim is unrelated to it.
You may be able to find an insurer that will give you cover at a higher price. There are some that do. The ones that promote their medical cover such as people have mentioned on this thread.
Also once you get a diagnosis, you will still need to declare it as pre-existing condition as well which is what I have to do if I get insurance as I have a ton of health issues.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Quick Grabbit, Freebies, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning and the UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.

"Is there any well known providers for travel insurance who provide cover even with people on wait lists? "No, AFAIK - maybe some other forum members have knowledge of a provider(s) who might offer cover though.Under no circumstances would I travel abroad without valid travel insurance - you could go down (God forbid) with something unrelated to your (as yet) undiagnosed condition. In that situation your cover becomes null and void after the hospital checks back with your UK practioner. That would be a nightmare scenario, especially in the USA.
