GHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance.  In some countries within the EU patients are still required to contribute to the costs.  GHIC will only give the same cover as people who live in that country.

I would say that you are awaiting a diagnosis not a procedure, at this stage.

If the companies that offer cover for pre-existing conditions really can't help, your other option is to cancel your place on the waiting list and rebook after taking out the insurance. You may even be lucky and find that your cancellation hasn't been processed before you rebook, maybe cancel through your GP and they won't have processed anything before you withdraw the cancellation  ;)
If you are saying take out insurance then go on a waiting list and not tell the insurance company this is terrible advice.

To the O.P.......If you are struggling to get travel insurance go where GHIC covers you.  Book near your holiday time or flight only with an exchangeable ticket e.g. Easy Jet so that cancelling wont be such an issue...... Before you do book however decide if the things that arent covered by GHIC like repatriation and personal possesions are important enough for you not to travel.

You are required to notify the insurance company of any changes  so would  still have to tell them.

Of you didn’t and had to make a claim for anything medical they would require your medical notes from your GP . That would show the referral and yiur claim would be denied.
I was saying you could ask your GP to cancel the referral, then take out insurance.
But the OP would still have an undiagnosed condition on his medical record which he is still required to tell the insurance company about.

They normally ask for any condition you have consulted a medical person about in the last X years.

I realise that, but OP has been open about their condition. I doubt that slight hearing loss in one ear is going to effect the premium significantly.

I realise this post began nearly one year ago..however..

I find myself in precisely this situation. Looking for annual travel insurance for uk and europe for pre-existing conditions ( previously happily covered) but now with the addition of being stuck on a NHS waiting list for some reduced hearing in one ear. It is not severe and is not related to my pre-existing conditions.

I have already been on the list over 6mths and just get updates every so often asking if i still want to wait or am I better!?

So looking at no cover at all until seen by NHS. Im gob smacked by this and that so many folk must be in a similar position. The sticking point with the last place I tried seemed to be that they wanted to know if it was for a procedure or not and unless the answer is a definitive 'NO' everything gets excluded. How do I know- I havent seen anyone yet!?

I'm wondering if anyone has come across any answers tot his since OP in April 24. tis
@Knitsy  If your issue is simply a straightforward hearing test (rather like a sight test at an optician) , are you aware that this can be done by opticians such as Scrivens or Specsavers? I suffered a sudden hearing loss and Scrivens told me that they could handle it and provide an NHS or private hearing aid as long as I hadn't yet seen anyone in a UK ENT hospital dept. In your position, I would be tempted to not tell the insurer if there is no expectation of a serious cause.

When I was referred for slight hearing loss I was sent for  a CT scan to check for any tumours.

I had to arrange that privately because there would have been a long waiting list for an NHS one. I had already done this and got the all clear before I got a hearing test at Scrivens.

GP responses to sudden hearing loss are very poor. It should be treated as urgent with steroids but many GPs and hospital ENT deps too don't do this. I eventually got a steroid treatment but far too late and only privately.

I had a similar issue with referrals and hospital visits.

I decided to open a Virgin Club M account.

That costs £12.50 a month and covers annual travel insurance (plus other benefits) for a family (under 18yrs) living under same roof.

After informing them of my history, I could either pay an added premium or carry on with pre existing conditions excluded, which was what I did as none were life threatening.

Do your research to see if suitable.

That had been tried, syringing ears done, steroid  tried all before referral.

Consultant tried microsuction before sending me for CT.
