I don't understand this what do you mean it takes you to bing?
right-click on the shortcut and choose properties and let us know what program it opens
Let me try again. I have a desktop shortcut to Chrome. It used to take me to Chrome. It now takes me to bing.com/?PC=Q621. The page is headed "Microsoft Bing". Hence "it takes me to Bing". Is that clear?
Shortcut properties say the target is Google Chrome app exeWe're all doomed0 -
NOW SORTED I installed Malwarebytes as suggested but nothing came up in the scan. However, the optional Browser Guard picked up an extension had been added to Chrome redirecting to Bing/Edge. A pox on Microsoft!
I really do hate Microsoft with a vengeance. We would both be quite happy with our Chromebooks (which if nothing else open far faster than Windoze does and are not forever doing updates), but unfortunately we need to use some software that needs a Windows machine. We're all doomed0 -

Shortcut properties say the target is Google Chrome app exeChrome is a web browser. Bing is a web page. The shortcut just opens the web browser - Chrome in this instance. When the web browser opens it shows whatever page is set as the default start page in the web browser settings. This is nothing to do with Windows and you won't find any Windows settings related to it.You are opening the Chrome web browser but it is defaulting to showing the Bing web page, not the Google web page you had before. Chrome is still opening.Change the default start up web page in the Chrome settings back to Google.2 -

it may take you to bing.com or whatever you say but that would be via a web browser so the shortcut does not open 'bing' it opens a web browser which then goes to bing - is that clear?
what web browser does it open
and as I asked what does the shortcut points to by looking at propertie1 -

You are still spelling windows wrongly, is it some inner child from the 90's directing traffic?Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

In reality, the problem you have is purely down to your use of the machine. Nobody else has had that issue. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

Don't get me started on Windows 11 and that you have to open a Microsoft account to use it (I know their are ways around it but for how long?)
Hence why I recommend trying linux I find it much more of a pleasure to use

You seem to have installed this extension.

It is nothing to do with Microsoft. Why you chose to install a random third party extension is anyone's guess. As you have found out, it’s highly counterproductive. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?1 -
and as I said your shortcut does not bring up Bing it brings up Chrome which had the hijacked extension. hope that is clear.1
