Alliance & Leicester shares

Hi I found an old share certificate I had for Alliance & Leicester Shares from 1997 and I have no idea if I ever did anything with them. How can I find out if they are still valid - or worth anything!
Many thanks

They became part of Santander in 2008 - if that helps jog any memories.

Might be of interest to a share certificate collector.

When it bought A&L it looks like Santander paid in shares and cash: "For every share they hold, A&L shareholders will get a third of a Santander share plus 18p." So if you hadn't sold them before this and did nothing since you'd now own some shares in Santander.

if you never sold A&L shares then you 100% own shares in Santander.
However, Santander is a Spanish company and their registrar is in Spain so if you have ignored all the correspondence that would have been sent to you at that time then you have a hill to climb.
Bear in mind it will probably be worth a few hundred pounds if that.

I’ve still got my old A&L shares, now Santander.   You should be getting dividend payments.   I used to get cheques but now the payments go straight in to my bank account.   I get a letter once a year, July I think, asking me if I want to sell them via Equinitti.

If you are not getting letters, have you moved ?

I didn’t buy or sell any of them and currently have 104 shares.

The phone number on the bottom of last years letter is 0371 384 2000 - Equiniti UK team.  They might be able to help you.

I suspect you will need your shareholder reference number.

I keep meaning to sell mine and have made a point of doing so when I get this year’s letter.
