HMRC can make certain changes of they think there is an obvious mistake on the completed return.

You can compare the original and revised calculation to see what has changed.

Indeed - successful submission of a return does not mean that it is correct or has been accepted by HMRC. 

While, in most cases, returns are ‘process now, check later’ there is, presumably, a cut-off where a potential refund exceeds a certain limit. 

I submitted my return last Monday and my statement has been updated today but, then again, I owe money.

Mine is still dead in the water. It's like it hasn't even been touched. Let's hope they sort it in time for Christmas.

Personally I wouldn’t be accepting any amendments without being notified first.
