This is why the conspiracy theory stuff is so problematic - for every scammer who knows exactly what they are doing, there are hundreds of people being misled into doing stuff which will harm them purely through fear. If you frighten some people enough they will lose their ability to think rationally and logically because the fear becomes all-encompassing. That can include a simple fear of being made to look foolish as well - "You're an idiot if you follow the herd and just accept the way things are currently" seems to be an oft-used angle to play in to people's insecurities.

Not disagreeing with that, but for others, replace fear with greed, and it also works.

Yes, agreed - although again I think this is often motivated at its root by fear - the fear of missing out on something that the scammer is suggesting that they "should be entitled to". And there again of course the fear of appearing foolish comes in - as often they are being told they would be "mad to miss out on this".
