If your own private meter is downstream of their meter then it's none of their concern. They will simply ignore it (unless it prevents their meter being read or they consider it dangerous). However, the OP wants to replace the existing defective meter, so fitting an additional private meter would not achieve the desired result.
And if you did tamper with the tails, then they would still ignore you as not their meter

I know we're talking about gas, but there's provision in the Electricity Act for the customer to arrange installation of his own meter, but only with the Supplier's agreement. Schedule 7 (2) and (2A). Is there similar provision in law for gas as well?

Another point, when a gas meter is removed then the pipe can be capped, uncapping the supply without written permission from the relevant gas authority is a criminal offense, something they are very unlikely to grant to someone who is not an agent of an energy supplier. Also, due to theft, it is not that uncommon for them to remove all pipes on the customers property when capping a supply.1

The lady shown bottom right in the first video runs a scam charging £250 a time to remove the supplier's meter and fit one she supplies. This is promoted and discussed on a rigidly censored Telegram group. Any reports of people being cut off or otherwise penalised are dismissed as false and quickly deleted.
This was one of their customers ..

In her deleted posts she showed all the paperwork, court application, warrant, site reports from the outfit disconnecting her, and photos of the event.0 -
And still she is convinced it is the energy companies who are at fault! 🤦🏻♀️🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

I cant understand why none have been prosecuted either under the Electricity Act or for straight fraud. The scam runs like this
(a) Pay that crowd to replace meters
(b) Contact your supplier and tell them youre moving out
(c) Ignore all further contact and enjoy free gas and electricity
Yet they express surprise when thing dont go quite so smoothly ..
"Guys we now have DCAs after us for the alleged debt left with octopus. I need to put the trespass info on the door and better prepare myself for bailiffs. Can someone send me the info and maybe a video or two that would help?
To be honest I never expected to attract bailiffs when we switched the meters. I genuinely thought we’d close the account and be left alone. It’s been nearly 18 months though but the threat of bailiffs has got me so worried."
