The 'Protect this item' section doesn't appear when selecting the 'Parcelshop Priority' service. From the price the OP paid, that must be the service they selected.
Yes, I concur, it doesn't appear for me either when selecting that service.
I've gone through the parcelshop priority on a PC using Microsoft edge and I still get the screen that has been shown that offers additional insurance as my parcel exceeds the standard £20 limit. I haven't tried it on a phone though, just on my PC.

Did you select USA as the destination? It appears for some countries for me. But not for the combination of USA + Parcelshop Priority.

Yes I definitely chose the US- I had noticed that the web site referred to returns going to Australia, but made sure to choose US as in the original post.

    Hello OP

Have a read of this :)

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6442661/couriers-lost-parcels-and-unfair-terms

For the cost of a stamp vs £1000 it's worth a letter before action.

Sorry if I've missed it but did the parcel leave the UK? I'm not sure it matters as they would be acting on Evri's behalf but I wonder if Evri would have any get out by claiming the US postal services lost it rather than them.
    This ^^^^

The OP needs to read the whole thread and understand the argument

For a grand it's worth a stamp - but the OP will need to follow it through

[@the_lunatic_is_in_my_head -  thankyou for finding that thread.  It won't surprise you that I was looking for it but I couldn't find it    :) ]

There's a consumer website that helps people fight back against courier companies who lose parcels and then don't fully refund the customer as the customer did not buy their 'insurance' to cover the full value. It's called consumeractiongroup and is a free service that's run by volunteers who provide guidance on the steps to take. There are many threads by people who have gone, or are going, through the process to reclaim back the full amounts owed by Evri and other couriers. Here's a link to the forum:  https://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/183-postal-and-delivery-services/

    And this  ^^^^

In fact the two decisions in the thread linked to by @the_lunatic_is_in_my_head originally came from the CAG website, although I don't think CAG were involved in bringing the cases.

I haven't been to CAG for some months (they don't like me because I sometimes question their advice) but they do claim - and certainly appear - to have a very successful track record in advising consumers making money claims against courier services.  (Often but not exclusively based either on not exercising resonable care and skill in providing a service, or unfair contract terms)
