  • I’ve twice had insect bites infected and the symptoms were exactly as you’re describing Cheery. (It was on my hand both times). Unbearable itch, pain, hand turned red and swollen. Definitely get some antibiotics. It really doesn’t sound like athlete’s foot to me.

Cheery - did you mention that the bite occurred while in the fields? Please get the docs to do a thorough check for a tic or its bite! - Having lived on a farm for six years I'm cautious and weary (on you behalf - 😆)

Thank you all. I did mention a field, but I have no idea if this happened there, but I spend a lot of time in fields (never without full leg coverage though, and I've never had a tick so far). I did think it was an insect bite at first,  but then it developed further and looked like pictures of athlete's foot. Hard to tell as whatever it is is between my two smallest toes (classic athlete's foot placement!)

Anyway, you are all right of course. I've had another couple of hours sleep and it's definitely even more red and swollen than it was at 7am so off to the pharmacy i go, and wherever else the day's rigmarole may take me 🙄

Good luck getting it sorted out today, Cheery. Fingers crossed it something easy to fix once correctly diagnosed.

  • Lawks Cheery - thank goodness you've been seen (Hurrah for Mr Cheery making the 'call').  Definitely do the dotted line marking thing - to analyse whether the swelling is abating.  And keep taking the medicine!  (Plus a load of natural yoghurt or other probiotic to keep your digestion happy!).

Hope your recovery is swift and full!

Good thing you went to see them. Wouldn't have done for the infection to have gotten worse. Bizarre how it could have flared up and gotten so bad, so quickly!

  • Well done to Mr Cheery - while he may sometimes be guilty of thinking of the most dramatic possibilities, he was right that your foot needed looking at! (MIL has just ended up in hospital with cellulitis as a result of insect bites from a few weeks ago i I flagged up when we were last down that it needed attention, and she saw the Dr a few days later who prescribed Anti-b's, but clearly they weren't quite man enough to deal with things!) Drawing round the red area is also a good step as it does mean you can see easily if it has spread.

Hopefully yours will react speedily to the tablets and the infection will "burger awf"  tout suite! (As a cheery aside to this - the National Exhibition has a suite of meeting rooms that is called the Tout Suite - it makes me giggle every time we find ourselves there for anything!)
