How do you actually do nothing?
    Got any plans for today?
    Do nothing
    But you did that yesterday
    Didn't finish
Reminds me of an American friend who was living in France. He told me he called up his aging dad in Louisiana to find out how he is keeping.

"Hey dad, what are you up to?" asks my friend.
The reply, "not a hell of a lot son, and that don't start till 10:30"

8:00 am telecon with folks who employ me to do some some contract engineering.
Then 25 mile bike ride to a cafe (coffee, beef-jalepeno and horseradish cream sandwich, raspberry square) and 25 miles back home. Listened to "The Rest is History" podcasts on Martin Luther.
Afternoon spent re seeding bare spots on the lawn and sat down and drank two beers while I admired my work.
Apart from the bike rides & contract work
    It sounds marvelous
I will charge 1hr for the telecon and I think I said two sentences. Enjoying the bike ride or not depends on how much you like cycling. It's a great low impact way to keep fit so ideal for older folks as it's easy on the joints.
But i always find it hard on my bum  :):)
Yes that's a common complaint which can be fixed with the right cycling shorts/pad, saddle and a bike fit. Also the more you ride your bike the more you will get use to it and the aches and pains lessen.
    The soreness becomes numbness?

As a cyclist myself, many bikes come with cheap thin saddles that are a bit wearing in places that should not be worn!  A wider, more comfortable, replacement saddle is always a good choice for an upgrade imo.
Think first of your goal, then make it happen!

Used to be the so-called "gents saddles" were extremely narrow and hard - those for the "ladies" were much wider and better padded! :)

I've heard it's about getting a saddle that aligns with your "sit" bones, so the pressure is on the right place. And also adjusting the angle and positioning of the saddle.

  • That’s right. I’d second Bostonerismus. If you build up the miles steadily you soon get comfortable - and if you want to do more, a bike fit is some of the best money you can spend. I had one a few years back and the tweaks to position weren’t massive but they made all the difference to comfort.

Cycling isn’t everyone’s thing but I love the different countryside and the wildlife I see every time. Buzzards and a hare yesterday just on the 15 mile pre-breakfast circuit.

Don’t forget the coffee and cakes too 😋. Compulsory as part of any longer ride.

Univ friend, turned 55 a couple of months ago, announced last week that he'd been offered a redundancy package.
Yesterday is his first day of retirement!
33 years of FS pension no doubt will be very lucrative.
Their Uni pension is still FS? I had FS from 1990 to 2016 but then it stopped and was replaced by Career average. I do have nearly 34 years in total. At least the FS part won't be affected if I retire before 67.
A misunderstanding. A friend on my univ course, who joined a firm with a FS scheme straight out of univ and worked there until Sunday.
I have no idea of his finances, except that he and his wife are very sensible and frugal souls, and that his employer will have had a strong FS scheme, albeit likely adapted over recent years like teachers and medics. It would still be leagues ahead of any private DC equivalent.
