At work I maybe only have a couple of cups of instant coffee, but at home I drink loads, 5-8 a day. I like my coffee quite weak, only have half spoonful of sugar, and have started drinking some decaf, so don't feel too bad about how much I drink!

Like you @tiger135, I tend towards coffee when I'm out and tea at home but not exclusively.

My go to in a coffee shop is an Americano with hot milk (no sugar in that) or sometimes a speciality tea like Earl Grey.

Tea and coffee, I don't discriminate! 2 mega mugs of tea + 2 big mugs of milky coffee every day. I cannot remember the last time I had a coffee out - apart from at a motorway service station - but I used to 3-4 times a week when it was more reasonably priced. At close to £4 a go these days its not an option, I simply can't be spending nearly £750 a year on coffee out and then not switching on the heating at home. Not when I can make it myself for pennies.

Yes paying £4 for a coffee is not very MSE. In the small town where I live there is a Costa, Starbucks, Cafe Nero and a couple of independents. I have never been in any of them !
Occasionally when out and about I will have a flat white.

DH used to have filter coffee on tap at work, and then used to get a crashing headache Every Single Weekend when he drank decaff at home. So he cut down what he drank at work, and since the filter coffee is no longer on tap he's been mostly OK.

Before I retired, I used to go to this little cafe near work most days. They have spoiled me for Panini: no-one else does them as well. And their coffee was wonderful too. Not MSE, but I still miss them.

I generally choose coffee when we're out, and drink Redbush at home. I do like a mellow Cappuccino, and avoid Starbucks which I find too bitter. Because we are making regular journeys to London, I can tell you exactly which service stations serve Costa Coffee, and which are Starbucks, and which are Starbucks in the catering outlets but Costa in Smiths. And because we're doing a lot of travelling, I'm finding I need a coffee every day, even if I'm not going out. We do have a pod machine but I prefer 'out' coffee.

Costa have an app which gives you a 'bean' for every cup you buy, or two if you bring your own cup. 10 beans = a free coffee, and there are occasional treats. Cafe Nero still have a card where you can get stamps. I'll go to an independent coffee shop over either of them, but either of those is OK.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • I can't live without coffee, and when I was a student, I spent almost all my money on places like Costa and Starbucks. I went there 2-3 times a day, but I was feeling envious when my peers could save some cash and buy some cool gadgets or go travel somewhere.
Then I ran into an article on how reckless you are spending on coffee in fancy places like Starbucks and how much weekly, monthly, and yearly you spend just on coffee. After that, instead of buying coffee from those places, I bought a used coffee machine, grinder, and coffee beans. I started to make a good coffee at home and saved some cash. I still have this habit and even bring my coffee in my travel mug.

  • I think I drink alot of coffee but sometimes I opt for tea too...
    • I use Starbucks (Dolce Gusto) coffee pods when working from home.
    • 3 have a deal with Caffè Nero for £1 coffee and this works in conjunction with their standard loyalty scheme -which you can boost with your Waitrose card linked too. This is close my work so tend to use when at the office.
    • I also usually pick up a free coffee from Greggs via O2 when traveling to the office by train.
    • I buy Starbucks filter coffee as its nice for a change and comes with free refills instore.
    • Usually in Costa a few times a week too meeting friends or family which normally involves coffee or tea.
    • I get a free latte at Waitrose when I shop there too with their loyalty card and my own cup.

I only drink tea and refuse to go in coffee shops with a huge markup for a tea bag and splash of milk, unless too far from home. Even then I resent their prices and have no idea why people bother.

I have 2 cups of instant when I get up, I'm not fussy, Aldi freeze dried tastes much the same as Kenco, the rest of the day I drink tea at home. If I'm out I tend to have a latte with oat milk as a treat.
I've started using oat milk in tea too, it took maybe a week to get used to it and now I can't tell :)

  • I am supposed to limit caffeine for medical reasons and cut coffee and tea out completely for a while and had hideous headaches at first which was quite alarming!  I was also advised that decaff is not much better for you.

Now I have 2 Dolce Gusto Lungos each morning, which I love, and that's it.  I very rarely buy coffee while I am out and rarely drink instant.  I find alot of take out coffee expensive for what you get.
