Payment entitlement

Our flight from Barbados to Manchester was cancelled twice instead of flying home on 29th November we flew on 1st December. The flight number didn’t change, we have been offered 600 euros is this correct or should it be 600 euros per day

Were you clearly notified of two separate cancellations by the airline, or did the communications simply refer to delays, etc?

There's a thread covering similar issues that's had some recent discussion:

  • The first notification was on the plane after sitting on the taxi way for 5 hours then told the flight would not go as the crew were out of hours and to find our own accommodation and report back to the airport the next night. The next night after waiting in departure lounge for 3 hours told flight cancelled again and to report back to the airport the next night

Just to be clear, you received a notification on the first day specifically saying that your flight was 'cancelled' (as opposed to 'delayed', 'postponed', etc), and then the same again the next day?  If they used the word 'cancelled' for two separate flights on different days then that should equate to two compensation payments, assuming neither was caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond their control.
  • First flight problem with computer/ paper count of baggage on board owing to time to sort which then required refuelling followed by a medical issue which meant crew would be out of hours so flight cancelled. Next day flight cancelled due to plane damaged during refuelling the previous night

Sounds complicated - have they shown their workings in terms of what their €600 offer represents and what they're declining?  A medical issue may be considered to be outside their control, for example....
  • Your original flight, EI030 from Barbados to Manchester, was unfortunately cancelled due to a set of unforeseen events which included a medical event. Airlines under European Union regulation 261/2004 may be required to provide compensation for flight cancellation. In this instance you are entitled to EUR 600.00 per person. Please provide the bank details for each passenger so we can expedite the EU261compensation. This is part of their email

Did you make two separate claims, one for the 29 November flight and another for the 30 November one, or just lump them together?
  • Just one claim but they have agreed to pay two nights accommodation costs so I assumed they would know the flight was cancelled twice
