Sadly, still no joy! ...  21 Jan was when I backed up manually before uninstalling and reinstalling!

Just for kicks turn on the "Include Videos" and "Backup using cellular" options.  Then see if it goes.

If it goes on Cellular/mobile data then its not a WhatsApp issue and that's either a local wifi issue or a problem with your phone. on the Wifi setup.  If the backup works on data that gives you a clue as to where the issue lies.
  • Disappointing.  But 2.6gb, that's a heck of a back up size, considering it doesn't include videos.  Just checked and my last back up was 64mb.  I am guessing 2.6gb must take some time to back up. When you do it manually, Whatsapp presumably stays open during the process.  But I am wondering if auto back ups are failing because Whatsapp is not staying open long enough to back up a file that size.  I think you have already checked battery saver settings, so I am not sure what else could be causing this.

Every night (usually) I restart my MotoG31 phone and put it to charge - that stops it sending app notification in the middle of the night.
Last night I forgot and it auto-backed up at 4am
    Hmm

    Hmm

Why are you restarting your phone every night?  They're designed to be left on in sleep mode for hours on end...
You can achieve the "no app notification" thing by setting up a bedtime schedule, or you can just schedule do not disturb for up to 12hrs at a time...

So are you saying now your Whatsapp backups are working on mobile data?
But if you turn that option off then it won't back up?

If that's the case then you know where the issue is.

It's just something I've done since I had my last Moto phone several years ago

Would that be more complicated than simply restarting at bed time?

Not sure as I turned that on as well as forgetting to restart

If that's the case then you know where the issue is.

    Answering above

    Good morning all
Left the phone on again last night having turned the 'cellular' option 'off' and it has backed up again perfectly.
Just begs the question as to why it can't do it during the day?
  • As a Electronics Mechanic I advise you and your friends to switch to SIGNAL app. Why? DNS shows that WhatsApp is sending some log files somewhere, for every few messages, I understand that for statistics. Just make your own DNS if you don't believe. I'm not a product, so switched away to Signal. After installing signal it runs in to your system, so in phone book you get "call" option for every number which is on Signal.
I found that in Signal phone calls are better: it means you get voice like more 90s time, but no delays, so I found it more comfy in conversations.

Do what you want obviously, it's "free" world, above that's only info.

My friends don't have Signal - I did try it but no interest! And I know nothing about DNS
