Gas supplier with decent customer service?

Hi, I've just moved home and need to sign up with a gas supplier.
Previous owner was with British Gas (on smart meter) and having spoken with BG (or tried to) Im very unimpressed.
Their call centre (in South Africa) is dreadful.
Can anyone recommend a better supplier, preferably one that has good customer service in the uk?
Thanks in advance

You must first sign up with the present supplier. Do you know who that is?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

British Gas, but I definitely won't be staying with them.

When moving home two yrs ago we went grom BG to Eon as this was the supplier of the new property. The customer service with Eon has been excellent after poor experience with BG.

Haven't had to contact Eon much but they've been really good when needed

I'm currently with Utility Warehouse.  They're fine but I've never had to call them.  Octopus are excellent but I switched to get the cheapest price.
  • Octopus if you can - I have found them extremely helpful and they are transparent with their billing system - mostly you have control.  You can set up DD with them so that you only pay what you owe or you can overpay so you have a credit cushion for the winter - up to you!  Monthly DDs.

In my experience (and I know some haven't been so lucky) they have done their utmost so my Co-op nstalled SM2 communicates with them.  And they reply by email - not immediately - but within 4-5 days which is fine as my problem is not urgent.

Octopus is the best utility service provider I have been with by far.  And if I had EV and/or solar - no competition!

Have been with many gas suppliers over the years, not all exist today... cannot comment on a single one's customer service though as never needed to speak/deal with any of them

They are all OK until you need to call them

Another vote for Octopus here. Website/app both easy to use with clear up to date charts showing use.

If you do need to contact them, emails are actioned within a few days. For more urgent queries give them a ring, answered usually within 5 minutes and most of the CS staff are very helpful and can sort out a simple problem while you chat. Anything complex might be passed to another department to action.

I will also recommend an 8 legged (or are they arms?) suppler - and I have also had a very positive experience with Ovo previously (my parents are still with them with an equally good experience).

But it really depends. Eon is recommended up thread, but they're responsible for one of the worst and most drawn out negative experience I've had with a supplier. Similarly, there's been several very bad experiences on here with UW...

I might suggest you contact the suppler you're thinking about joining with a general question about tariffs or billing (make something up). If you normally use social media, try their facebook messages - if you're a phone person, try calling. See how long they take to answer and get a sense for how helpful the person responding is :)
