I may need a new thread as this isn't what this thread started being about, but...I'm tempted by Samsung galaxy A14 unless anyone thinks it either won't meet my needs or is complete overkill for what I want. Also - a newbie question - is there a way round 'Monthly cost will rise every April by inflation + 3.9%'. What a con of an idea when agreeing to a contract. Is it worth trying to avoid that (how?) or is this just an unavoidable con? Thanks for help...0

OK. Buying a phone. Got confused by the first question. Remember I'm a newbie. !!!!!! is this about:
Bill Capping
Set a cap on top of your plan to control how much you spend on out of bundle services every month.
Would you like to set a cap?

This is for additional things you can charge to your mobile provider account. For example charity donations by SMS, or premium rate number calls, or roaming charged abroad. Basically anything not within your subscription bundle.1

so if I don't want to pay for anything extra then I need to set a cap of zero?

Once you click on £0, then it confirms: By selecting £0 monthly cap some services will be unavailable, including:
Sending picture (MMS) messages, calling 070, 084, 087, 09 numbers, making calls and sending texts outside of the EU, text/call donations to charities.
