if the stress of waiting for proof of funds is too much, you can easily follow up with either 'proof by X date or it's all off' or 'this has been dragging on for too long, you haven't responded to my request, so I assume you aren't in a position to proceed - I am now pursuing other options and consider this matter closed'.
