Thanks. I probably am people pleasing but I'm going to pay the outstanding bill and ping for a small amount to cover petrol. I think the pair could have done the job but it would have taken too long and cost too much and if I never planned on using them again I would be just pay the bill …. but … if I need to ask them to do another job I am happier this way.
Although - lesson learned - if someone messages and says they can do a job I will def check the skill base and equipment base next time

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!3 -
I think a pleasant message asking what the outstanding amount is what with contractor not bringing appropriate equipment, is perfectly fine. End it with saying you appreciate their work and look forward to working with them again soon. No harm done if the answer is the full amount but also good to bring the issue to their attention in a chilled way, I'm sure they would prefer to know what issues occur for their customers
