I have a 1966 (ish) version of Good Housekeeping's cookery book which I prefer to the dairy book of home cookery. I've looked at later versions of the good housekeeping one & was not impressed.5

For years I wondered why I couldn't get a consistently decent toad in the hole following Delia's recipe. Tried everything, then saw a posting online (maybe MSE) which mentiioned using 2 eggs instead of the 1 in Delia's recipe, and bingo, I can now make a decent Yorkie. It was the semi skimmed milk & lack of butter that was the real problem!4

I am terrible for half-halving Yorkshire pud recipes - i.e. I think 'I only need half', so halve the flour and the eggs and then forget to halve the milk... and wonder why it doesn't rise! 😂 (I now think this should be on GP's diary under cookery fails). I use my trusty student recipe book for toad in the hole/Yorkshire pud though - How to Cook has limited use (although I'm cooking her tomato risotto tonight - from her Veggie Collection - faffy, but worth it occasionally).Slinky said:themadvix said:Delia’s book for me too, although I’m sure the ancient (standard 1970s) Dairy Book of Home Cookery contains a recipe too (don’t everyone have one of these?!). I did my fridge drawer on Sunday when I got back from the visit - there were cucumbers in such a state in there that I needed to scrub and wipe the drawer, so you’re not alone 😉😊

I cannot tell you how much I love this comment. Lamb Paddock is indeed my dream refurb but clearly it is not the VNM's. Yesterday I received many links to lovely properties on Exmoor that needed no work and he knew he had me when he sent me one of a place that had a terrace outside with a view of the sea. I have now said if Lamb Paddock is a no, I will go for that one - a tad over budget but no work needed whatsoever and my morning cuppa with a view of the sea - and the moors behind. What could be better.Suffolk_lass said:
PS that is my dream refurb and I am older than you. A static caravan while you refurb it to make it habitable then bring in the volunteers - film it and post on social media for others to watch and follow for a "Chateau-DIY" type series and payment from followers, affiliation links and sponsors.... just saying
I also did laugh at the idea of so many of you having fallen for the charms popping into the auction to bid
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

Also very grateful and appreciative of the fridge tales. I only managed one shelf. This past weeks have been harder I think than I realised.
I had a very good chat with hormone doctor that was thought provoking. She feels that trauma is the problem and explained how whilst a lot of my hormone markers are low on blood test and she understood why GP suggested I chat with her, she would not alter meds. She explained how the stress hormones put the brakes on the thyroid hormones and make reverse T3 which stops the thyroid hormones correctly doing their job and is more of a 'hibernation hormone' and is why I am so cold and exhausted. (She also disagreed with GP re iron supplement but that is another story).
Her thoughts are I need to tackle the unresolved trauma, so we discussed options. EMDR was mentioned, I said no as I tried that and had severe flashbacks to childhood. Trauma release therapy was suggested, I have tried that, the result of that was a bout of severe depression. Then massage for facial release she suggested. Yes, tried that, left in tears and spooked massage therapist as I just got dressed and walked out in tears. She asked for brief details about childhood and concluded that the years with PPH just piled more than I could cope with. We ended up with I would go back to solutions based hypnotherapist as she really helped me cope with PPH and meditation.
I actually thought that was a bit of desperation on her part but I totally understood her explanation of why she thinks stress is at the root of what is going on and her links with stress hormones and everything else that was out of balance on blood tests She also suggested I try breathing strips at night to see if breathing better helps with sleep.
Clearly I need to rethink what I am going to do about stress and, clearly the trauma from PPH is unresolved and needs looking at.

that overlooking the sea one sounds very nice indeed. Will miss not seeing 'Lamb Paddock DIY' on your utube channel though

I suppose the therapies must have been working if they got such clear reactions for you but understand you cannot afford to set aside a year to undergo a long programme of therapy/recovery therapy/recovery to work through it all completely. I imagine there would be times when it would be all consuming leaving no time or energy to work.
Its completely fascinating in a scientific way what the hormone wifie was saying about the body and how it functions. Fascinating for us reading but of course less fascinating and more frustrating for you trying to sort yourself. Perhaps though, even without further therapy work, you might find things settle a bit as being told the cause of something will likely unconsciously help with the body's reaction to 'unknown cause', so some symptoms might start easing or even resolving

Your talk with the doctor sounds useful in that you have possible ways forward. Could it be that your low points are associated with times of year? That's happened with me and it doesn't necessarily have to be a trauma that happened at that time, its just the time of year sets it off.
Sometimes just opening a door on these things can lead to a dip, so be aware of that if it happens, but perhaps when that happens it's taking some of the pressure off and it comes out in a more moderated way. Daisy has a good point about knowing what's probably the cause of your symptoms.Watty1 said:

This sounds so nice - and a big county so plenty of horse space, I'd assume.
Many years ago under another user name, I was involved with a thread where someone had bought a dream cottage that then went seriously wrong and needed massive refurbishment. Someone's written a blog post about it - perhaps that was in mind when I read about Lamb Paddock!
