Yes hate to say it but I too had scarlet fever twice as a child. Was hospitalised with it once.I hadn’t realised that it had reared its ugly head again nowadays.

I don't think I've ever had it but this poor child had it twice in about three months. I don't know whether it was lab-confirmed, though. They still had some reddening this week but was cheerful and lively.

At least children can be treated at home now, I was sent to the isolation hospital.  There were 6 of us got it, but none of the others had measles too so I was all on my own (sob, sob) & they were all together.  Visitors thro glass & only on Sundays & my poor mother was very very pregnant.

That sounds pretty dreadful, @badmemory. :( Were you in for long? I suppose as a child any time is long.

Isn’t it a sad memory, I had the same experience. It was during the Queen’s Coronation and I remember my parents holding a little glass coach and horses up at the glass screen. Then when I was finally allowed home, I caught it again a few weeks later and was kept in bed at home with a sheet hanging at the door.My fear of hospitals has stayed with me ever since.I was four at the time.

I was much more fortunate as I had my scarlet fever in the 1970s, so although the household was plunged into isolation, I didn't need to go into hospital.
My mum spent a year in a TB sanitorium as a teenager in the mid-1950s, so she did know a thing or two about nursing infectious disease!

I wasn't quite 4 in early 1950 & actually didn't really mind it.  The nurses were lovely & used to do jigsaws with me.  It would have been worse a year later after I lost some of my hearing.  Not the measles though, just a few too many bouts of tonsilitis that went to ear infections.  They didn't used to give out antibios back then.  I was really shocked when I read that they could treat scarlet fever at home though.

My heart does really go out to those who had to suffer isolation: it must stay with you forever. We have a lot to be thankful for nowadays, though obviously there are illnesses now that didn't exist back then.
