Thanks to all who are encouraging me to report the incident at the shop - I've given it more thought and I have the receipt for details of till and timing.

This afternoon I finally braved the cold (around freezing all day but nice and sunny) and went through the market where I got a bag of six apples for £1. They look like good ones too. Then it was on to Bee &M for stocking fillers, but having spent ages reading labels I realised cheap sweets ain't gonna happen this year. There are two young children, two milk-intolerant people and one vegetarian to consider and that rules out a huge amount of things I'd have bought in the past. I did get a couple of things for the little girls but couldn't find a colouring book I liked. I've simply become far too fussy! I spent £30-ish, which includes a bag of the 89p sugar. On the way back, in another supermarket, I saw yellow-stickered smoked sea bass which we'd not had before. Lovely. I had mine after work, DH had his earlier. I've also had some of the whey in porridge (it's vaguely yogurt-y so I sweetened it and it was okay).

I only got one other errand done: my glasses needed to be adjusted and are no longer giving me a mini pressure sore. The other errands were about getting the bank to reissue the unreliable card, and taking my phone to the shop. This last one is dependent on having the receipt for the battery, but I don't know what sort of liability the shop has.

Another cold, bright day. I spent the morning helping with the toddler club and came back via Asd a for a 'tins' shop. There's now a vegetarian chilli in the Instant Pot and I've embarked on a clean out of a kitchen cupboard. There are so many baking trays and I really need to reduce them. I doubt a charity shop would take them so it may be metal recycling. How on earth to decide what I need? The solution that suggests itself is to put the uncertain ones in a bag in the loft and anything I don't need over Christmas is on the hit list. It would be nice to have more space!

    Housekeeping £10.79

Apparently the coldest temperature for 14 years was recorded last night not so far from here. Minus 9.4C, which is definitely on the chilly side. It's not gone a lot above freezing today but at least we had sun - lots of it! Tomorrow I need to get the laundry done to take advantage of the dry air before Storm Bert shows up over the weekend.

I'm quite impressed at how many baking tins I had in that cupboard. One's gone in the recycling, as have a couple of magazines. Not huge progress, but some. I suspect the Christmas cake won't be mixed till the weekend now as there doesn't seem to be much flour.

I spent a bit of time on the finances including looking for the receipt for the phone battery. I suspect I threw it out, but the odd thing is that I would have paid on my credit card, and it's not showing up on the statement: I've checked back to the beginning of the year. I looked at the bank statements too and there's a record for the phone shop, but it was DH buying a screen protector. Could I have bought the battery a lot longer ago than I thought? In which case there's no point seeing if they will refund or replace. Or perhaps, as DH suggested, the chap simply checked the battery but didn't replace it? Yet I remember the conversation I had with him, as he asked where I'd had the battery fitted, because it hadn't been installed properly. I replied that I'd bought the phone new and the battery had never been replaced.

So the phone gets worse, but I have only 19 days to nurse it through till I can get my hands on the replacement!

  • Do you have a Salvation Army food center or a homeless shelter nearby? I would think the food bank would also welcome pots and pans so their customers could cook the food they are handing out. We take ours to the homeless shelter my family helped start 40 years ago. Still going.

Agree, put all the spares somewhere out of sight. If you haven't used them in a few months you really don't need them :)   If you have a lot you could just pop a marketplace free ad up.  Or on Freecycle.  I've been surprised at what people take to repurpose.
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!

I'm wasting time this morning searching for something else - the download of a booklet you can fill in so your nearest and dearest can find details of everything like bank accounts, funeral wishes, living will etc. I can't remember if it was Age Concern or Age UK, and the key words I've tried haven't really got me anywhere.

I really need to get down to church as I'm on the cleaning rota. DH has gone out for a walk and the washing is nearly finished.
