How did I get this weird profit/loss figure on on IWeb statement?

When looking at my ISA account and also on my statements, for the VWRD fund I have a figure of 7,552.15% in the profit/loss column. I'm not quite sure how this happened but it also appeared on my last statement. I can't tell how to read my actual account profit/loss percentage overall because it might be getting affected by this random figure. I wonder if it was caused by adding in money for this years ISA. Has anyone else seen something like this?

Did you previously own lots more of it and the profit percentage is being calculated as the total profit you ever made, but divided by the net money you've spent on acquiring it, purchases minus sales? That's happened to me in similar contexts.
  • Hi isayhello,

Not iweb, but my wife's ii Sipp suggests a gain of just over 67,000%. Sadly, this isn't reflective of a genius investor and I can only think they  struggle to calculate gain when transfers have come in (pure guess though).

    Best wishes.

It is a bad idea to invest in VWRD, which is priced in dollars. iWeb will charge you 1.5% foreign exchange commission when you buy, and another 1.5% when you sell. VWRL would be much better choice. VEVE with a market weight of VFEM would be cheaper still. You should never rely on brokers' valuations. If you want to know your investment return, work it out yourself from public numbers.

Have you transferred holdings in from another broker? It's common for iWeb not to receive (or apply?) the correct purchase prices from the previous broker and I have similar with iWeb because of this. I keep track of everything in MS Money so it doesn't matter to me what a broker shows.

    A couple of thoughts
    1. When you look at your account under Profit/Loss has it concatenated the profit (as £/p) and percentage? I.e. £7,552.15%. My £/p figures are prefixed with a £ and yours (as entered above) is missing the £ and does have a space between the 2 entries
    2. What is your book cost? If you subtract it from your valuation does it come to £7,552? If you divide your valuation by book cost does if come to 1.15% (i.e. a 15% growth)?

If it is a book price issue because of a transfer, iWeb can update that on request if you can supply the figures.  I did this via their chat, and it was updated within minutes.

Thanks, thats good to know. So I think this was also a transfer and a similar thing might have happened, it makes it difficult to understand how it's doing though and how it's affecting my average % gain or loss.

Thanks, I just remember transferring this after selecting it a long time ago, I thought the foreign exchange would only have an impact on initial purchase and then anytime I sell, is that not the case? It might be worth looking at a GBP version then and I'll check those you suggested, I want to make a few changes in time for the new year.

1 - So I logged in to check just now, that final column is just a percentage and there is no £ sign.
2 - The book cost is £255.92. I tried calculating the things you suggested and didn't get anywhere near those values.

I will try and see if the live chat can help, thanks.
