Surely they can’t have knit four or five stitches then switched to a new ball? You’d need a ball per stripe!

I suppose you could wind off small balls so each stripe did have a separate source of yarn.  That would be an absolute nightmare with a cat anywhere near with all those little yarn balls bouncing around!  On the other hand Puddytat would be in heaven - what a kind Meowmy making such a lovely game!

It’s definitely intarsia, @maryb.  No floats.  Think of lots of little balls or shuttles or bobbins, dangling from the back of your knitting as you knit. Every time you get to the next stripe, you twist them around to anchor the two stripes together and then knit in the new colour.  The real difficulty is working out how much yarn to wind onto each, so that you don’t have joins.

From my observation, it looks like the jumper was knitted in lace-weight (aka 2ply, to any Aussies out there).   It’s garter-stitch, which means that it was more likely knitted by hand than on a machine but, so far I have not been able to find a pattern that comes close to this jumper, even without the stripes.

Hi all,
@PipneyJane I have just done a google for sideways knitted jumper and several patterns came up that look similar without the stripes that you could put stripes into, to my in expert eyes anyway They seem to be on sale in the bay of e and etsy mainly. Some are longer but knowing your abilities I imagine you would be able to sort that

Finished my handsewn pants this weekend and absolutely love them, they have been a labour of love for the summer months. I haven't worn pants in so long though that I do feel quite fat in them (ek) and I noticed my distinctive lack of separates (double ek!). I already have a 1940s twin set and a separate cardigan on my needles but feel like I need to get a plan together for next year of what I would like to have to go with my pants as I made sure that they are sturdy and that they can change over time if I lose the weight I want to.

I did a cracking double-take at that before realising you mean the American use of pants to mean trousers...

I get this when I'm using Duolingo to improve my French - it's very American (no problem with that as they've been kind enough to produce a free resource that I benefit from) so I've ended up learning two languages when theoretically I'm studying one. What I'd call 'football' (le foot) is referred to as 'soccer' and what I'd call 'trousers' (le pantalon, and I wonder why it's singular?) are 'pants'. When I looked up the spelling I found there's a Spanish dictionary that says "In English, 'pants' means 'trousers' ", which I'd dispute whichever way you take it.
Further, 'The words "pantalón" and "pantalones" can be used interchangeably in Spanish to refer to a single pair of pants.' (Spanishdict.com) A single pair? Yes, I suppose it makes sense, but how is that a better usage than 'a pair'? And why do we in the UK have a concept of them being a pair when we are highly unlikely ever to wear just half the item?

I think I had better sit quietly with my knitting for a while as I'm very confused.

Got to love 'two countries separated by the same single language'.
