Slightly off topic but if he is interested in birds and can hear them (open window will suffice), there is a fascinating free app called Merlin, you point phone at the bird song and it identifies the bird. Even works with traffic noise in the background in our garden. There's another one, can't recall name, you point phone at the stars and it identifies the constellation. Think it works by magic. If he's interested in the weather rather than just temperature a weather station showing wind speed/direction, dew point , temp, max/min etc might be good for him. You can get them at various price points. I personally have a Davis Vantage Vue which are a quality item but around £500!3

I'd agree that a weather station is probably the best option, I went rather more downmarket than @skycatcher, spending around £40. One issue is that the outside sensor can be quite innacurate on high temperatures if the location you choose is ever in direct sunlight, which most will be in the summer unless you also invest in a Stevenson screen. I don't think mine comes with an App, if it does I've never accessed it, but I'm sure there will be ones that do.

It had min/max temperatures for outdoors and indoors. You just have to make sure the outdoor sensor is out of direct sunlight and sheltered from direct rain. Batteries in the outdoor sensor lasted about 6 months. Has a self setting clock as well.
Got a simpler min/max thermometer now, as it's all I really want.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. There are plenty of temp/humidity sensors on Amazon. Most are for indoor use and cheaper but e.g.

Those things don't really bother me so I've just ordered one to try for that price.1
