So who do you think you are Octopus?

I was happy(ush) being a customer of Shell Energy, which has now been taken over by Octopus. Separately our neighbours have been comparing providers and one (not with Shell or Octopus) found a really good deal with Octopus and signed up. I looked at the deal online myself and it offered me the same deal which is £100 a month cheaper than my current deal with Shell/Octopus. So I emailed Octopus (with their "award winning Customer Service", saying I was in this switch over to them,. but could I instead sign up for their deal.
This is the (edited) reply I got:

.…… we are unable to assist you with your account as we do not supply you with energy. I recommend contacting Octopus Energy directly to inquire about your account details and discuss any potential options for switching

    What is the deal, though?  What are the unit rates and standing charges vs your current Shell ones?

    £100 a month sounds like a huge difference. Like Spoonie, I'd be interested to see the comparable unit rates and standing charges for both your current deal and the Octopus one you are looking at.

    I imagine Octopus will honour existing Shell fixed tariffs until they expire. So with current prices being lower than a year ago, then maybe there are cheaper deals. However comparing what somebody pays per month is meaningless. You need to quote unit price and daily charge price.

    You are a shell customer, until they move your account over, Could be months or they could never do it and keep it separate.

    • You'll need a working smart meter to switch to Tracker. If you don't have one yet, we can install one at no extra cost, but you'll need to stick with a standard tariff, such as Flexible Octopus, until your smart meter is installed and running properly (this usually takes a few weeks – but some homes can take much longer).

    Log in to your account and request to switch. We'll transfer your tariff and get in touch when it's complete.

    I thought they'd turned off their AI reply bot as I didn't get any strange replies to my last email to them. It seems that the bot is alive and well and no better at addressing queries!

    If you haven’t actually been moved to Octopus from shell yet, you could start a switch to them - might get you there quicker and get you onto the cheaper tariff quicker too as a result.

    plus if you know anyone else who uses octopus, ask for their referral code and you could both get £50 

    (referral codes not allowed on here, but hopefully you know someone, as lots of people are with octopus these days)
